I wonder....... Speaking hypothetically, suppose that science is never able to create artificial

intelligence. Suppose they are never able to construct consciousness.

This is not a minor concern. The Japanese, some years ago, spent billions trying to create artificial

intelligence - and failed. In particular, their failure indicated that consciousness or "AI" cannot be

reduced to a simple set of 'rules'.

My point is this: if artificial intelligence 'never comes', then what would this tell us about the universe

we live in? Specifically, would it tell us that consciousness is the fundamental reality of all

existence? That atoms and such are merely an illusion - and that consciousness, not

matter, is the ultimate ground of all being?

I ask this here because I can't find this question discussed anywhere else...

    Met,

I often wonder if we'll ever see any signs of NATURAL intelligence in our world.....

With Moores law and technology changing drastically from day to day, I believe AI will be here before 2020.

Yea, but when you go to sleep, I still exist,....

It took billions of years for higher level consciousness to develop in organic beings. You know, I notice "intelligence" in insects and arachnids (spiders). Why would we expect that machine intelligence will have to perfectly mimic higher order primate (human) intelligence.

Furthermore, evolution shaped our thinking processes to work in conjunction with our internal and external environments. A brain without a body and its natural life support systems (air, water, food, etc.) doesn't work.

It seems as if we have yet to fully appreciate and respect "natural" intelligence, and now we want to make "artificial" intelligence so we won't get in trouble if we mistreat it.

Doing it with software won't work.

When a machine can build electronic pathways (same as neuro pathways), then we'll have artificial intelligence.

It might take a program to govern the building of the pathways, but alone, software is not enough.

Artificial intelligence is void of common sense.

    Hi Metatron

I've always thought that we have nothing to fear from Artificial Intelligence, if ever they manage to create it.

The real worry for me is if that they end up creating a silicon-based copy of us - and we get Artificial Stupidity.

    Then we're all in trouble.

    Duncan.
