    Interesting thread.

Every time I read the output of a translation software I am reminded of how far off the mark we are -- yet.

But I'm not sure there is any theoretical limit to the development of "artificial intelligence" either -- other than the amount of data/perception input and the fluidity of the processes. We already have computers almost "seff-teaching," "protecting themselves," "responding to each other" etc.

It would be rather interesting to see whether the metaphysical notions of "consciousness" and "personality" are blown away by such a development, or become part of it as necessary cyber-fictions; or otherwise modify.

Did you see the one show I think it was on the science channel where a invetor was able to get small analog computers to think for them selves and control small robots. They were a kin to insects in intelligence area. They were solar powered and learned to move to light to feed on their own.

zag, by mapping the NN I meant the human brain.

I thought so :) Here is an excellent introductory book. You can download either individual chapters or the whole thing. http://page.mi.fu-berlin.de/rojas/neural/

Neural Networks are fascinating field. Whether they are the right vehicle to create humanlike mind and consciousness is another issue all together. On the other hand perhaps the issue is with hardware we use. After all even our brains use only percentage of available capacity to create conscious thoughts. But maybe that is exactly what’s needed i.e. abundance of processing capacity in which thought appear as side effect. Or maybe solely electric mind is a wrong way to go about it. Only further research will tell.
