Even while brainwashed, I used to respond similar to that. I used to make comments at the meetings about how we should be serving God out of love and not out of fear. I told them that even if the end came past our lifetime, it didn't matter because we were serving God because we loved Him and not because he promised a reward.
Those cards and things would upset me too. They have no idea how to comfort anyone. .. and they are never any help.

It like being hit below the belt, when the Dubs use emotional ties to lure you back into their fold.
This happens to me on a regular basis and even though I should be used to it by now, it still affects me.
Just stand firm in your beliefs.

I think their intentions are sincere. Take it as a compliment that they thought of you.
In the beginning I received these "flowery" spiritual message cards from people. I got especially nauseous about comments "that satan is....(fill in the blank)".
The thing that I could not get past, in my mind, is how when all is said and done, my issues are not just with the religion but with the very nature of god. After what I experienced in this religion, I could never serve a god who would allow us to waste decades being deceived and/or being abused. It is as if our life is so worthless to him that he simply does not care about whatever injustices, etc. Also, those who are perpetrating all these injustices just keep going on and on enjoying the status quo either not knowing they are doing wrong or simply not caring. Who knows? Maybe they don't really believe any of it and think this is just a joke and they are going to benefit while they can at everybody else's expense.

I don't know if your speaking of the WT leaders but that thought had crossed my mind. I think if the know it's all B.S. and still try to control people, they are even more evil then I thought.
I think the card sounds very sincere. Why feel that all in the congregations are phony? I wasn't. I loved the people and many times told people I missed them, etc. and meant it. I really thought that Satan was behind all the negative things happening in people's lives and that going to the meetings could fix everything.
I would thank them for their kind thoughts. I would tell them how much you thought about Dennis. Be sincere in return. Why not?

There is no way to really know this. But, if it were true then, yes, I do believe that would be evil. Maybe most of them just think they are going to get an "A" for effort. They just lump everything under the category of "imperfection" and think they are going to slide if they just go through the motions.

Sincere? Naaaahhhh.............when the 'friends' would say, "we missed you at the meeting on Sunday" that was code for, "where the hell were you and why the hell weren't you at the KH bored our of your skull like the rest of us?"
The card was dripping with condescension and presumptuousness. And self-righteousness. No wonder you were upset.
If the JWs send a note or a card, or stop by to say they missed you, it is a bad thing.

How can the sincere ones win once you've left? Seems like a no-win for them no matter what they do.
