Ground Zero

Sitting around a campfire last weekend, a few of us were discussing what is "going on" on the rebuilding or the construction of what is being built at Ground Zero in NYC.

We all agreed that we see NOTHING on the news....we see NOTHING in magazines....we hear NOTHING AT ALL about the progress (or lack of) in whatever was chosen to be built there! It is as if this never happened.....at least to those of us far beyond walking past the site to actually SEE what is going on! (being 400 miles away from NYC!)

I was asked to see what you folks on JWD had to offer on this....and hopefully gain some insight from those who live in NYC as to WHAT is happening there now.

    WHAT is being built....

HOW FAR have they gotten on this....

and WHY all the silence for something that captured our attention for so many months?

I agree, there appears to be not much going on concerning the rebuilding of the WTC.

There is however a lot going on.

Much of the work is focused on the remediation and clean up of the hazardous materials in the soil under the site.

This process could continue at least until the end of the year up to 18 months. I work in the environmental industry and have quite a few clients involved on the clean up work as we speak.

I believe that the building developer has setled with most of the insurance companies who indeminified the site for the full insurance policiy limits or close to it, so the funds for the clean up and rebuild should be available.

Also, if you know much about construction projects, I am sure you are aware that nothing gets done on time, especially in NY, so who really knows how long it will be before we see the finished project.

That's a really good question. I am going down to NYC on the 20th and I'll have to take a look.

    BTW- HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sunspot.

I've worked in real estate for years. Any big project requires years of behind the scenes work: planning, reviews, meetings, permits, revisions, more meetings etc. None of this looks very interesting on the news, so it doesn't get covered much.

    Hi Sunspot,

Anytime I walk by it during the day, there's work going on, but it looks the same. It is a long process, but it is happening. They took a while going up from sratch, so I expect the cleanup and rebuild to be immense in time and processes.

Also, if you know much about construction projects, I am sure you are aware that nothing gets done on time, especially in NY, so who really knows how long it will be before we see the finished project.

I might be somewhere with one of the architects this weekend and chat about it.

I was in NY two weeks ago and stayed at the Hilton accross the street from ground zero. They are working 24 hours a day. I could see the foundation from my room. The foundatio appears at or near ground level.

This will take a long time before anyone will notice the progress.

Esquire magazine has regularly been running articles on the Ground Zero project.

There is a lot of info out there on it, you just have to look. I believe I've read stuff on it in the NYtimes as well.

Thanks for the info and for the Birthday greetings! And no....we haven't heard much of anything in months, which prompted the question we were discussing last week-end! You would think that something of this magnitude and you would think that would invite so much attention....would be virtually hidden in a few articles scattered in publications that are not geared for the general population!

    hugs,

    Annie
