Saying 'goodbye' on the phone. US style?

That's funny. I'd notice it too, most recently on the newest Doctor Who, in one of the earlier episodes, when Rose calls her mother from the "End of the World". they're talking and just finish a sentence and then her mom puts the phone down. No, "goodbye"... nothing.

    So, I suppose it's less a "U.S." thing and more a film/tv thing.

I've noticed with my boyfriend and I that we don't say any sort of goodbyes or I love yous anymore. I think our road might be coming to an end. But no goodbyes... but with everyone else I say goodbye.

As a general rule you will not hear people say goodbye on tv. I read an explaination once suggesting that the good-bye cuts into precious storytelling time.

The was an episode of Rosanna where the several of the O'Connor family ended their calls with "bite me."

I do not generally say goodbye at the end of a phone conversation. They know I am gone when they hear the click.

I tell everyone over the phone "goodbye" or "bye". As was mentioned, tv and film aren't good references to american phone etiquette.

I always say good bye but my dad must hangs up. It feels cold.

Sometimes I hang up the phone and wonder if I said "goodbye". My mind has already left the conversation and for the life of me I can't remember and feel kind of bad about it.

My husband started early on in our relationship with saying "love you" before hanging up and if I ever forget it is an immediate call back, "you didn't say I love you!"

I've even gotten my parents to say it back to me now when we end calls.

My favorite though, is that quite frequently my husband slips and says "love you" to his friends when they are getting off the phone. He tries to play it off as "love you.....man!"....and I always get to laugh. It's his fault, he started it.

Ha! I've noticed this too. And, no, I don't think this represents what is common in the U.S. I always say "catch ya later; bye" or something like it--and everyone I know does as well. I will say this: I have found people who don't always greet you on the phone at the beginning of the conversation. There are a few people I know who do this, but one in particular. It'll go something like this...

    ME: Hello

HIM: Soooo I was reading something in the paper that I thought was pretty interesting.

    ME: Okay...

HIM: I understand you won Best of Show at the latest ADDY Awards.

    ME: Dallas, is that you?

HIM: That's two years in a row, isn't it?

ME: (mocking) Hey, Dallas, nice to hear from you. Yes, this is Jon, and I'm doing good too.

HIM: I'm just saying that a guy who wins Best of Show two years in a row could start to get a big head; wouldn't you say?

    ME: (sigh)

i had a poster tell me that I was dismissive when saying bye.

I have been on the phone with people that take longer to say bye than the original conversation.

I am horrible at ritual type behaviour. chit chat and any kind of stuff like that.

I will try to work on it.

I gotta go, bye......(is my usual way to end a conversation)

    makes my mom nuts!!!!

    Nvr:

Some say, " see ya later, masturbator".

I think I'm gonna try: "Watch your prostate, 'postate".

    That's so funny!

Jon, talk about time management. This friend of yours doesn't waste any time on needless greetings.

I personally, feel better around people who ---at least when talking business--- are courteous.
