Is it the members of that particular new KH who all chip in to pay for building materials? Or do the GB boys pay for them? I know the JWs all volunteer their time to build the KHs, but who pays for all the building supplies?

    Thanks for the info,

The local brothers and sisters do in the US, as far as I know. They can borrow from headquarters, but will budget to pay back over time.

There was a very enlightening thread about this maybe a year ago.

The society encourages KHs to borrow money from them in order to rebuild or renovate. The society owns the buildings and the cong just keeps paying off the debt.

Some people who do the actual building work get paid. Most do not. It's not *all* volunteer labor.

Maybe someone has a link to one of the threads I'm thinking about?

It is always the local JWs that pay or provide everything land, materials and labour. They may even take out a loan from the WTS and perversely even after they pay for it, capital and interest, the property still goes to the WTS. But from what we hear in poor countries the WTS will pay for the land (if not donated by someone) and the materials.

Right now our congregation is in the process of funding a new kingdom hall and on top of that having to contribute toward a new assembly hall in Columbia, SC.

In the western world the local brothers and sisters pay for them, and they give the free labor and any visiting builders are housed and fed at local brothers and sisters expense - but the WTBTS owns the hall after - quite clever dont you think

Well the average congregations members . . . pay and pay and pay

DOES WTS own Kingdom Halls?- Challenge

You know those requests for the World-wide building fund?

    Here is how it works.

1 A congregation pays into the worldwide building fund. $$$ money to the WTS

Then the congregation needs to build a hall.

    2. The congregation starts saving money to build their hall. They apply to the WTs Building Fund for a loan with interest. $$$ money to the WTS

So they have sent money twice to the WTS - once for the worldwide work (they are part of the world still aren't they?) They pay again for their loan. There is no credit for the money they sent to the worldwide work.

The two links above discuss how the WTS has changed the rules so that if the cong is dissolved for some reason the WTS takes back the hall - the cong does not own it even after paying twice for it.

Nice scam! WTS wins - cong members big loss

The links above are well worth the read

They have encouraged the building of kingdom halls where they are not needed too. I have seen congregations shut down after building. They remodel the assembly halls so often, it's ridiculous. What happened to meeting in homes or building unpretentious halls?
