dinner time guilt

I have a family of 4. Each of us have very different likes and dislikes. My husband and youngest daughter are vehemently opposed to tomatos or tomato products. I.e. spaghetti sauce is completely out of the picture. My youngest hates mushrooms. Neither of the two kids like spicy foods. My oldest won't eat crunchy foods. She takes the filling out of a taco shell. But my youngest won't eat soft tacos. My husband likes anything that can be turned into sandwiches. I am not a huge fan of sandwiches unless it is in the form of a hamburger. My husband generally doesn't like things creamy, rather prefers crunchy type foods. He is not a vegetable eater period. Nor does he like fruit. The kids will eat a little spinach. The youngest will eat most vegetables with cheese, the oldest doesn't like cheese period, unless it's on pizza, even then she prefers the tomato sauce. I like pasta with homemade sauce or jarred. I can throw together a chicken parmesean and be happy and so would the oldest, but the other two would turn their noses up at it.

I have chicken breasts. A box of pasta roni parmesean something or other with angel hair. Some frozen corn and canned french style green beans.

I just got finished watching a show on some cable channel featuring a perky blonde teaching a busy family how to eat healthy. HA! Those kids actually LIKED these weird looking foods called vegetables.

I'm feeling quite guilty for not putting more effort into this thing called dinner. Because quite frankly, I have all but given up and let Mr Swan take over the whole thing. Which generally results in frozen dinners or frozen fried chicken cooked in the oven with french fries.

    anyone else?

heck, does anyone have any suggestions? (and yes I've tried Rachel Ray and no my kids won't eat her stuff.)

Kids nowadays are like that. They don't have the kind of mothers we had. My mother cooked healthy meals which included fresh vegetables and her philosophy was to eat what is set before you and say nothing about it. And you had to clean your plate or sit at the table till bedtime. I learned to love fresh vegetables because when you get hungry enough, they'll taste just fine.

Billy Bob and Buford were sitting in the living room watching tv and drinking beer. Buford saw Billy Bob's dog eating some stewed carrots and exclaimed: "Wow! my dog would not eat stewed carrots!" Billy Bob replied: "Well my dog wouldnt either for about a week."

If I were you I would cook a health meal for all, if they don't like it they don't have to eat. Vegetables should be part of every meal. The more you give in the more they will demand.

I do one main dish for dinner and that's it. I've tried to take into account everyones' likes and dislikes and thankfully it's nothing too extreme that I can usually feed everyone in one sitting. I don't force the kids to eat all of their portions but I don't give them big portions either. Sometimes I cook something that one of the kids will refuse to eat, that's fine they can load up on the veggies or bread but I will not cook another dish. They won't starve.

I raised my kids like I was raised. If you didn't happen to like what was being served, you didn't eat. Period.

It's a parent's responsibility to provide healthy food for their kids. If most kids had THEIR way, they'd eat nothing but junk. Healthy food is SO important; more important to one's well-being than a lot of people realize. That's why there's heart disease, cancer, etc. now in epidemic proportions. Institutes have been collecting billions and billions of dollars to fight cancer, etc. for DECADES. But it just keeps getting worse. If people would only realize it's WHAT WE EAT, for the most part, that determines our state of health. "Your are what you eat".

I feel for you Black Swan! I remember what a struggle it was sometimes trying to get my kids to eat what's good for them. If your kids are very young, it WILL get better as they get older. Be encouraged.

HAHA this thread made me laugh. I can't believe there are still women that go to that kind of effort just to give their family a good meal. You could always do what my wife does: not cook at all.

If I didn't eat what was put in front of me I got a smack upside the head and sent to my room.
