My mutual fund is still worth less than it was in 2000.

    I'm letting it sit.

    It'll turn back around.

I'm in it for the long haul.

    Yes, it is frustrating, Gregor

    Me too.

I don't want to even look at it.

I only got into the markets about a year and a half ago. Just before it tanked! I had only just pulled a little ahead last week. Still holding on though. I'm not so heavily into it that even losing it all would bankrupt me...yet. Interesting times though and traditional wisdom seems to be that when there's blood in the streets is the time to buy.

Here's a cheap way to play the stock market and learn the ropes. Also, the best performing players will get cash prizes. Pretty cool!

In addition to mutual funds, I've been doing my own investing for about 10 years.

Most people make the mistake of thinking it's a game. It's not. When you buy stocks, you are buying part of a company. When I buy, I carefully analyze their financial statements, and try to get to know something about the management and prospects of the company. Once I'm satisfied with the company, I will watch and wait for a price that looks like a bargain. If it never comes, then I don't buy.

If you buy quality, and know why you are buying and selling, then the daily dips and spikes mean nothing. Today, one of mine is up nicely, on an announcement of a successful share placement and a large order for materials. Another is down. The rest are pretty much flat.

Overall, the stock market tends to rise and dip based on large-scale news, fears, and excitement. Individual companies don't drop in value just because someone gets scared about interest rates or banking losses.

Well, I am in the stock market big time, this has been a dissappointing few weeks but I am not really worried. I have a good bunch of investments that have been doing well and I am in it for the long haul. I think by the end of the year, everything should be alright and should realize a small profit for this year.
Incidently, as the emotions start to cool down, people will come flocking back... there are a lot of good stocks on sale right now, the financially shrewd one may want to go shopping soon...

So much for privatized social security.

Privatization would be a very long term finance situation. History shows that in the long term the market always goes up. And Congress can't steal it as they have the SS fund. In the last 12 months the DOW has gained 20%. The average is 11%. Not bad, ZI'd say. Bryan Have You Seen My Mother

Yes, and I do not look but once a quarter. Stay unemotional that way. Emotions cause bad decisions.

    Don't buy individual stocks.

Do buy good track record equities-based mutual funds.

Stay in it for the long haul, and don't worry about the roller-coaster.

You'll probably be wealthy when you retire.
