The Old Testament YHWH probably started his career as a canaanite tribal deity and was later hijacked by the israelite priesthood (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_%28god%29). You probably know these deities weren't really what you would call of the loving type (think Moloch :). This explains some of the violent tendencies of "Jehovah"
Apart from that, the Torah is made up of many different sources representing different interests (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_hypothesis). This explains some of the schizophrenic tendencies of "Jehovah"
I personally think the New Testament God is somewhat more lover, as reflected in the life of Jesus. On the other hand, the incorporation of the Old Testament as "typology" of the New Testament also incorporated parts of the violent God of the Jews.
So the short answer is: there is not one Jehovah - his mind is quite literally fragmented.
