The World has always been in turmoil, through every period in History. There is nothing new under the Sun.
Does the news still scare anyone else?

What nvrgnbk said:
Study History.
And do read A Distant Mirror -- one of my favorite books.
Global warming is about the only news topic that scares me these days. I was worried about colony collapse disorder too, until I read that it was mostly a matter of "bad beekeeping."

Politicians, ceo's, lawyers, experts, analysts, etc babble on and on. Most of it is posturing, acting out, selling something, propagandising. Talking head front men on tv expertly use voice modulation (sorry for the wt words, there) to make their vocal vibrations seem very important. They know how to project authoritativeness to hook the audience. The media is like a big meat grinder that minces, dices and processes thin slices of reality, adding the apropriate spices of the day. It then spews this processed media food out for the consumption by hungry vewers.

Not anymore. It did take a while to get past that fear though. I do get disturbed by south florida news; not because I am afraid of the end, but because there is so much crime and car accidents there. Tallahassee news is so much more mellow. South florida news is also greatly sensationalized...esp. channel 7, anyone who lives down there knows what I mean.
I suggest reading up on history like everyone else suggested. I would also try to avoid watching it for a while, or at least find a more balanced, less sensationalized news source.
It will get better.

Not since I escaped from a doomsday cult that has many dysfunctional individuals serving in responsible positions within its walls of captivity.

No, not in regard to biblical prophecies. After taking some geology, history, oceanography, and comparative religion classes, I don't worry about Armageddon. But I do get mighty worked up over hurricanes coming my way. That's news that worries me - not for fear of Armageddon, but for fear of tornadoes, flooding, downed power lines, and other nasty inconveniences associated with hurricanes. Take some classes in comparative religion, poli-sci and geology/meteorology. It should help you to feel better about how the world works. It may help you feel less worried about Armageddon, and hopefully more concerned about the ecological footprint we leave behind.

Do you ever listen to Public Radio? http://www.npr.org/about/
The news from NPR tends to be a bit more in-depth and less sensational than what you get on other radio and television news programming. It often focuses on problem-solving in ways that regular radio and tv news tends to miss. You might find it more helpful to listen to news from that source, rather than from the more sensational programming out there, at least until you feel more sure of yourself and safer in your world. -

I still second guess myself all the time with the "what if it IS true" scenerio
I do this too. Almost a panic type of feeling.
However, I do find it getting easier to put those feelings aside and be more logical about it, the longer I'm out.

Yip, they really did brainwash us with that ... Gosh, I remember lying on my couch at home in the afternoon (I was recovering from an op, so I was at home for the week) and watching CNN as 9/11 happened, I swear, I nearly went to a meeting that night, and boy did my mom have a field day (scuse the pun) when she called me to discuss it...
Try living in one of the most violent, crime ridden cities in the world, everyday something happens here that my mom uses as a reason to believe that we are living in the last days...
But as one of the other posters said, I think that the only thing that is truly scary is Global Warming...
