How long it takes depends a lot on the group of elders you are dealing with, the ones that Dfd you. A friend of mine went back after being Dfd for fornication and it took them a year of non-stop meetings and groveling at the back of the hall.

If you intend to fade again or become pretty much inactive, it will be up to your family how closely they associate with you. You know them better than us. If you think you can pull it all off, it might be a way back to your family. A hard one, though, to say the least. Best wishes to you.

JWDaughter said "still never baptized" so that's not an example for you.
The year might be the right amount of time. If you really want to give this a
try (I could never do it, but you are free to try) I would recommend just going
to a couple of meetings and then think whether you can do this or not.
Remember, you will receive the cold shunning. Arrive slightly between the
last minute and a tad late- leave directly after the song and prayer.

If you want to do it still, go to virtually every meeting for 3 months and then
approach the elders. They might approach you sooner and change this
advice, that's fine. Anyway, wait that long to approach them then say how
you have come back to Jehovah and want to be reinstated. Hand them a
letter at that time, one already worked out. Some here can help you with
    the letter.

If they come back with, "need more time" wait another month. Submit the
letter again. After that, you decide how much longer you can do this.

If you are reinstated, fade fast. They can't do anything really if they don't
    catch you violating their rules.

(Very few people will go through with this after going to a few meetings. It
just is asking too much of someone who knows it is not the truth.)
