The derivation of Yahweh from hawah is formally unimpeachable, and is adopted by many recent scholars, who proceed, however, from the primary sense of the root rather than from the specific meaning of the nouns. The name is accordingly interpreted, He (who) falls (baetyl, ßa?t????, meteorite); or causes (rain or lightning) to fall (storm god); or casts down (his foes, by his thunderbolts). It is obvious that if the derivation be correct, the significance of the name, which in itself denotes only "He falls" or "He fells", must be learned, if at all, from early Israelitish conceptions of the nature of Yahweh rather than from etymology.

Ok allow me to quote from a thread from the past

The joys of folk etymology. :) I should point out tho that this segmentation must double the first he, i.e. yh-hwh; had hwh (with the same holem pointing as "Yehowah" if I am not wrong) been a verb, then we could posit y- as a 3s inflection (e.g. "he ruins"), but sadly this is not the case. :)

This is so stupid. I suppose it was started as a (poor) joke and the author didn't even imagine it might be taken seriously.

By the same "logic," the Spanish pronunciation of Jesus "means" horse (Hebrew sus).

It doesn't really make that much of a difference if the letter J was created in the 12th century. I mean, it's a unique name that only applies to God. God hasn't struck anyone down for not calling him by the right name. It the pronunciation and correct spelling of his name was too important for God, then he would've made sure to keep it from being lost with the passing of time. God only doesn't like it when people misuse his name and by misuse I mean, use it in vain, use it as an charm or something like that.

I don't see anyone else making a fuss about all the other names that in English and other languages start with the letter J like Jesus, Jeremiah, John, etc. Those names aren't accurate either because they have the letter J in them. So, it's no big deal if "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" is not accurate. There's no way of knowing God's real name so who cares if some call him Jehovah and others call him Yahweh?

    Justahuman - but super nonetheless

Jehovah's Witnesses are sooooo particular about soooo many things, but; airly dismiss the mispronunciation of their God!

The answer that I used to hear to this was that we don't have the exact pronunciation of Jesus either. We just pronounce it the way it is used in English. The pronunciation is different in almost every language. I'm not saying, necessarily, that this reasoning is right, but I'd like some comments.

Thanks IP, I`ll look at that thread.

Yes, I`ve heard that argument too, but it`s just stupid. The NT was written in greek, and Jesus is called "Iasous", so his name is translated from the very beginning (from the hebrew version Yeshua). The same is not the case for Yahweh, and it is questionable whether it should be translated (if it`s as holy as they claim it to be).

INTRESTINGLY IF A jw WAS TO GIVE A TALK, AND STATE WHAT THEY NORMALLY DO ie THAT THE USE OF THE "NAME" IS THE IMPORTANT THING. BEFUDDLED. THEN SOMEONE SOMEWHERE WOULD COME UP WITH THE IDEA THAT THIS IS CAUSING DIVISIONS OR AT LEAST A DISRUPTION IN THE PEACE ENJOYED AT THE MEETINGS. THE BROTHER WOULD BE ADMONISHED AT LEAST PRIVATELY TO WHAT HIS BELIEFS ARE EXACTLY. ALL BECAUSE HE WAS USING A MORE PRECISE PRONOUNCIATION OF THE TETRAGRAM JUST LIKE THE NAME BROSHURE SAYS .TO DO. If sll of this is true, where do they get the definition of his name as meaning "he causes to become". Everytime I'm in earshot of JWs that's all they prattle about.
