"what about blown insulation? is it worth it?"
If you can - look into using something like foamed insulation. Polyurethane.
It seals all of the cracks, and I believe that you can get a much better R-value/inch than you can with other types of insulations.
You will also be sealing any 'cracks' in the walls that might let in 'air', or even critters.
Just my .02 worth. I'm sure there are other 'experts' that will disagree.

When we were in England in '96, we stayed with friends of friends and they had one. It was pretty neat. I thought it was a great idea.
Finally they are getting them here. Do it!!

My sister had one installed during her remodel, she had to have the wiring done to. She loved it - however, like many things, you should only put in what you can realistically expect to get back if you intend to sell in a few years. She sold her house and even though she did so when it was high and made a small profit, the tank was not a selling feature and she really didn't recoup her costs. sammieswife.

I disagree with this statement... if one is able to show power bills that show low monthly bills - this is INDEED a selling feature.
I have a friend in Austin who sold her home - and one of the selling 'features' if you will - was the low power bills that she was able to show the prospective buyers.

changeling, i will if you will
sammieswife, yes, we are planning on staying in this house for many years. i love it, and the neighborhood is great.
jim, yeah, critters are a problem. as i do each room, i am looking for where they are coming in. in this area, there is a huge roach problem. we have to spray every 3 months. squirrels are also a problem. we have a pecan tree in the back yard, and they are getting into the attic, and tearing the insulation off the a/c vents. i am actively trying to see where they are getting in.
also, another huge problem here is termites. i am looking into treating the studs in the wall. i am looking at a product called boracare. anyone ever use it? it's supposed to keep termites and mold away for at least 40 years. any other advise on this?

I've always found renovations to be a "tank-less" job myself.
Tank you very much, I'm here all week....
