Does anybody think the WBTS will ever 'ban' the internet?

Lets face it the WBTS have an ever increasing fear & paranoia of X-JW websites like this forum where the WBTS is exposed for all its dodgy business and people can find out things about the goings on with its members, its leaders & embarassing history of cock ups. One day in a desperate attempt to put a tighter control on this they might make it an official 'ungodly act' to go online and put it in the same category as a 'secret sin' such as smoking or watching porn films.

    Any opinions on this anybody???

I have always felt that day will come, at least I am sure it will come before the big A

nah. too many dubs have to use it for work related stuff and email. also- the WT themselves have a webpage. it would be seen as too unreasonable.

They'll (or have already) just ban looking at anything religious other than the societies webpage and from looking (fact-checking) up any information (scientific/medical/social/political) that the society quotes.

Looks like they are already heading in that direction:

    Just a couple of points:

"a few associates of our organization have formed groups to do independent research on Bible-related subjects"

The Watchtower Society doesn't even call them brothers and sisters, setting up the wall that will be erected when they cast them off for violation in the future perhaps?

"so as to analyze the accuracy of the New World Translation. Others explore scientific subjects related to the Bible"

It is interesting how deep the fear is running on this in Brooklyn. If the base population of Jw's begin to recognise that the NWT is among the greatest frauds ever perpetuated in the name of Christian writ, the walls will begin to fall like Jericho.

"Jehovah provides what is needed so that all of God's people may be "fitly united in the same mind and in the same line of thought" and remain "stabilized in the faith."

Now we get to the crux don't we? UNITY of THOUGHT, mind control. In effect; put WTS ahead of the Bible itself and all will be fine. [Didn't the Nazi's just suggest to the Jews that they were going to shower before retiring to the barracks?]

"Surely we are grateful for Jehovah's spiritual provisions in these last days. Thus, "the faithful and discreet slave" does not endorse any literature, meetings, or Web sites that are not produced or organized under its oversight."

As if this should really be important to anyone who truly loves the Bible.

Why no mention of the 'faithful Boreans' here?

"In the first century, the apostle Paul warned about getting involved in exhausting, time-consuming subjects, such as "genealogies, which end up in nothing, but which furnish questions for research rather than a dispensing of anything by God in connection with faith." (1 Tim. 1:3-7) All Christians should strive to "shun foolish questionings and genealogies and strife and fights over the Law, for they are unprofitable and futile."-Titus 3:9."

The comparison does not even fit. The apostle did not warn against examining the scriptures, in fact he was encouraging an exam of the scriptures instead of these other matters like 'genealogies'.

They are using scripture to support not looking at scripture?

"we recommend that they explore Insight on the Scriptures, "All Scripture Is Inspired of God and Beneficial," and our other publications"

    Not surprising, that.

How many Jw's still can't see the bars swinging shut on them?

Depends; if they want to keep hiding things, yep!

If the Watchtower loses enough money from the recent crackdowns, they might go to a mainstream route then; I would say no.

    I don't think so.

That would have been like banning TV in the 50's. People aren't going to agree to that. However, they will continue to stress avoiding certain things like apostate websites, porn, some educational and scientific sites, etc...sort of like not watching violent or suggestive TV programs.

Suggestive TV programs like Nova and Cosmos? How about the Discovery channel??

Yes, but banning will work on some. Which is better than none.

"Ban" sounds like a ridiculous word.

If they were to do this it would make them sound even sillier than what they already are. For instance, what about online banking? What about if somebody had to look something up on their job? What if somebody wants to order something online? The internet is used for very legitimate purposes nowadays and they would be an even bigger laughingstock. Sadly, I do know some illiterate types who would obey such a thing but such people aren't even inclined towards anything that is even remotely academic or intelligent.

Possibly, if they were to be so stupid as to use the word "ban", this would only make the more intelligent people in the hall wonder even more. Besides, how could they enforce something like this? Are they going to put a big-brother camera in people's homes. This is too stupid to contemplate.

I think its far more likely they will emphasize monitoring each other on the net. Pushing parents and spouses to snoop on what their loved ones are doing online and report it to the elders. That way they can strike terror into the j dubs by d'fing people caught looking at ex jw sites and porn etc. Without actually outright banning it and making themselves look like hypocrites.
