This isn't exactly a direct answer to the thread subject, but....

It amazes me that current day Christianity (especially Americans) embrace the Old Testament as much as they do (when convenient) and makes a fetish out of the Ten Commandments as they do. For one thing, Americans are in love with animals, pets and wildlife in a Green sort of way that borders on the pathological.

Now juxtapose this fetish for making animals part of your family with the embrace of the Old Testament and see how the sparks fly!

Ritual animal killings is as far removed from present day Christianity as you can get. And yet...

The psychology which produces one seems to produce the other.

"If God commands it"...is the hallmark of their impulse to slaughter.

Morality, rather than being founded upon an unwavering standard of transcendance devolves down to ritual whimsy and blood lust in the appeasement of deity.

The Catholic Church refined the animal sacrifice quid pro quo by the sale of indulgences. Isn't it ironic that Martin Luther found THIS to be abominable and yet had no qualms about animal slaughter???

And why don't hardcore Jew's, like Hasidic still do this. By the way, I saw an interesting documentary on Hasidic and they think they are the only "real" Jews, just like Witnesses think we are the only "real" Christians!

    what a world....oompa

Your question reminded me of a scene from the movie The Road to El Dorado (2000).

The high priest Tzekle-Khan is jealous of Miguel and Tulio's popularity, having been acclaimed as "gods" among the native people of El Dorado. After the duo defeat the entire native team in a ball game, Tzekle-Khan sees a cut on the forehead of one of the "gods". The priest rushes to his lair at the temple and conjures up a spell to defeat Miguel and Tulio. He asks one of his assistants: "Do you know why the gods demand blood?" and when the assistant says that he doesn't know, the priest answers his own question: "Because gods... don't... bleed!!"

It's Tough to Be a God (lyrics by Elton John)

    I hardly think I'm qualified
    To come across all sanctified
I just don't cut it with the cherubim
    Being worshipped is a breeze
I barely know the words to any hymn

    Listen if we don't comply
    With the locals' wishes
I can see is being sacrificed or stuffed
Let's be Gods, the perks are great
    El Dorado on a plate
Local feelings should not be rebuffed

It's great to be a God
Tread where mortals have not trod
Be defied when really you're a sham
    Be an object of devotion
    Be the subject of psalms
    It's a terrifying notion
All those prayers and thos salaams
Any normal man would bridle if he's forced to be an idol
And a normal man's exactly what I am

All the same it's pretty clear
The bastards don't keep much up here
They must have zillions under lock and key
But Gods can force then to unleash
Enough to make us nouveau riche
Beyond our wildest dreams so follow me

    Can't you see I won't relax
    If religious maniacs
Tell me I'm all-powerful and sublime
How can I be their belief
When I'm lying through my teeth
Why don't we just say some other time

It's great to be a God
But if you get the people's nod
Count your blessings, keep them sweet is my advice
    Be nirvana be salvation
Be all things to all men
    Butter up your congregation
    Every Sunday score a ten
    All the alternative is dire
    Simply frying pan to fire
So sign on two new Gods for paradise

Like I love the smell of meat grilling on my BBQ grill, God just loves the smell of burnt flesh. 'Tis a restful odor you know

Not buring FLESH, burning FAT. It was the FAT that was removed from the sacrifices that was offered up and made to smoke. Fat smells great when burnt. It was not charred meat. So, little details make a difference. A casual reading of the Scriptures doesn't always give the clearest picture. Glad to help. JC

    Jehovah was a murderous bastard!

    Thank God He's not real!

God is real and he's going to kill, murder, execute, terminate (whatever) a whole lot of people at Armageddon, starting with those in his own house, meaning the Christian apostates. A great slaughter is about to occur. But then, since people who call God names have a death wish anyway, he's just fulfilling that wish for them so all is well. Gehenna awaits. JC

Animal sacrifices were a concoction whereby the high priests got to eat rich all the days of their lives at the expense of the humble.

    OD SACRIFICE: SATANIC OR JEHOVIC?

Whether or not Satanists have inappropriately indulged in
    ritual
killing in the past, it is a fact that blood-sacrifice is sanctioned by the
Judaeo-Christian god; it is a hangover from the primitive past, a part
    of
both pagan and Judaeo-Christian religious heritages, but where is
    there a
    specific Satanic sanctioning for it?

Interesting observation, but not so fast about claiming the origin of Jewish sacrifice stems from the pagans. The concept of the sacrifice of the sun in fact was established in EDEN, when God said that Satan would "bruise him in the heel", meaning Satan would kill Jesus. Satan, in turn inspires mimicky and mockery of this sacrifice in the pagan culture. What the Jews do represents a direct reference to Christ being given in sacrifice for sins. It's very fundamental. Those animal sacrifices represent Christ and his blood being spilled which causes forgiveness of sins.

By the way, even the buring of the children, causing them to "pass through the fire" relates to Jehovah at the time of the rebellion in Eden raising the bar for his servants, that is, love and obedience to God became and absolute requirement, those not compliant would be killed. But Satan would claim this was a partial God and that those serving God would only do so out of convenience. God said that's not the case, those loving me would gladly die for me and to prove it I'll require them to die as well. So what essentially God did was put all his children, the angels and men "through the fire"; those not loving him enough to die for him failed. Those who loved him enough, survive the fire, and get resurrected. So the infanticide in fire represented the "purification" of these children as God purifies his children with fire by causing them all to die. Thus Satan tries to mock God, claiming he's cruel to kill all his children to make a point. Of course, in the end, all the good children are alive again and all the bad children remain dead!!! YIPPEEE! So, of course, Satan is silenced and upset that God came up with an easy, foolproof solution to get rid of Satan with no legal issues. That is, it's up to God to make everybody life as temporary as that of an animal if he wishes. Animals are born, grow up, have babies and grandbabies, get old and die. Why should it be any different for angels or mankind? That's God's legal right as the Creator. As long as he requires everybody to die, he's not being impartial. So technically, Satan isn't really being put to death for being the murderous bitch that she is, since everybody is put to death at some point, even God's favorite chief son, Jesus Christ/Michael the archangel. The penalty is paid by HOW LONG YOU'RE DEAD! You see, death is not that big of a deal with you come back. You can die in your sleep for 3 hours and never know it! That's the KEY. So sure the penalty for sin is death, but actually it's PERMANENT DEATH. What we are concerned with, thus, is not dying, but not being brought back, not being resurrected. That's where Gehenna comes in. There is no return from there.

Point being, there is an optional view that similarities in Jewish culture and lithargy are not always borrowed from pagans, but could be an adaptation of what was handed down to everyone at the time of Noah, and the concept of blood and sacrifice started in Eden, or as you say, with Cain and Able, so the Jews get their concepts from those original tenents, not the pagans, who simply have a parellel take on all this.
