Hi Terry, sorry to hear you're going through a difficult time. Sounds like burn-out to me. This happened to me many years ago. I was in a very stressful job and I remember one time falling over in the middle of the street from exhaustion. I took the day off. I'll never forget what my manager told me. "Take all the time you need as long as you get the job done". In time I realized that I had to quit and I gave them my notice.

    Here's link to burn-out: http://www.psywww.com/mtsite/burnout.html

    Hope it helps.

    Dear Terry,

Your walking away may have been the most healthy sanest thing you could have done for yourself. I have done the same thing on several jobs. You have to stand up to your integrity and be true to yourself. Although it seems so radical, I think something in us snaps when we burnout. ESPECIALLY in highly creative and intelligent people. We go and do what we must to exist but it is not who we are. And its very very frustrating to say the least. Please don't get discouraged.

I am not trying to say I have any answers really, but I hardly think you are mental.

After the shock of what you did wears off, I think it will open new doors for you that were not noticed or could not be reached before. I would not think of it as a negative only a stepping stone to the next thing you go on to do. All part of progressively growing.

At my old job my fantasy was to tell the Elder I worked for to : "Take this job and Shove it! I aint workin here no more..." Instead I just left quietly.

It must feel very uncomfortable to not know what is going on and I'm glad that you are going to see someone about it.

My heart goes out to you Terry. It's a very scary experience to lose control, it happened to me in a bad way a few years ago. With help you can find the problems and start healing. My thoughts are with you.

well, I can't diagnose you - but I really empathize. I add my good wishes to all the others - please keep us posted. It was generous of you to share what happened - and smart to get an appt. immediately with a mental health professional. I'd like to hear the outcome, if you don't mind sharing. Take it easy today - get out in the sunshine somewhere someone will keep bringing you iced tea while you read the entire Sunday paper.

    Terry,

I enjoy your insightful posts, I still have the one about knowing how to be wrong open as I have been poring over it intensely.

No nothing wrong woth your intellect, that's for sure.

I went through something similar a while back where I felt as if I were in the back of my skull curled up in a little ball in front of two gigantic windows that were my eyes.

You know, being depressed doesn't mean being sad neccessarily, it is primarily about function, not mood.

There's something in your subconscious you are not addressing, or are coping with incompletely I bet.

I think you are doing the right thing to seek help, and I share Mouthy's prayer, and others' gladness your boss seems so understanding!

Here's to you and your health and happiness Terry,

    RD
