    Carmel,

I find in your post history these comments, which I imagine would be seen as rude by any JW lurkers or people who don't know their teachings very well.

...and how would drinking the cool aid increase revenue in Crooklyn? carmel
the JWs who are all warm and fuzzy as long as you "go along".
Call me an absolutist, but frankly, the WBTS is so full of crap, you'd need a honey bucket the size of Texas to service it.
I think you'll find lots of parents just never stop parenting and JW parents have the additional pressure of thinking they have to "save" you from falling off the cliff that leads to distruction, blah, blah, b lah!

Do you have an unwarranted superiority complex too?

"I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say that one is an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have. Somehow it was better to say one was a humanist or agnostic. I don't have the evidence to prove that God doesn't exist, but I so strongly suspect that he doesn't that I don't want to waste my time."

A believer hardly ever asks about evolution or cosmology, etc and remain open themselves to being proved wrong.

    Who is being more rude?

BECAUSEssssssss, There is so much information out there about evolution and cosmology that a believer doesn't NEED to ask YOU! Information is thrown at them!

Must one discard spirituality because of feeling that there is insufficient evidence to support belief in God?

    Spirituality Without Faith

    Characteristics of Spirituality

Authentic spirituality involves an emotional response, what I will call the spiritual response, which can include feelings of significance, unity, awe, joy, acceptance, and consolation. Such feelings are intrinsically rewarding and so are sought out in their own right, but they also help us in dealing with difficult situations involving death, loss, and disappointment. The spiritual response thus helps meet our affective needs for both celebration and reconciliation. As Richard Dawkins puts it in his book Unweaving the Rainbow, we have an "appetite for wonder," an appetite for evoking the positive emotional states that are linked to our deepest existential questions.

If most of them stopped getting the facts wrong about these things, I'd agree with you. "We came from monkeys?! It's all chance?!" Ugh!

I'm an atheist. I don't mind "defending" atheism online because I have nothing to lose by doing it. In everyday life "offline" I try to avoid argument and too much controversy. I'm just a peaceful person, and I try to get along as best as I can. However, defending atheism online seems a bit pointless for the most part because theists have already made up their minds and could often care less what I say in defense of my position.

Regardless, every sentient being on this planet perceives reality in its own personal way. Some perceive God, Goddess, or Pantheon. Some see the Universe in a reductionist way where cause answers effect following specific rules. Others struggle to wrap their minds around the unanswerable, the ultimately unknowable, and yet find joy in being. Does life have a purpose? Who cares! Just live!

    Dave
