Ok, don't seriously I had one they suck.
Get a Nissan Pathfinder or an 80's Toyota 4runner. The 4runner is is equal, if not better than a wangler 4x4 wise and more practicle.

Toy is nice but jeep is easy to work on and parts are cheep. ebay and craigslist are great, esp craigs cause you can pick key TX cities. I have a good friend in NC that keeps three or four on his lot and buys cheap and sells at low margin. New Era Auto sales in Winston salem, nc. on peters creek pkwy. Ask for brad and he can get you a deal.
good luck...oompa

Also look for a 4x4 Mitsubishi or early 90's 4x4 Mazda pick up. They have the same Mitsubishi drive train minus the problems and are loads more practicle.

Only if you get the L6 but then you get hit in the gas and weight departments.

This thing? It looks cool and CHEAP. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/87-TOYOTA-4-RUNNER-TURBO-4X4_W0QQitemZ250170858669QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6442QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Yep, that thing it way better than a wrangler and you'll thank me latter practicle.
It's a really the first cross SUV it's still a pickup and it's got a back seat that folds into the bed. Way ahead of it's time. So was the K5 blazer, but I digress.
The back part comes off from the factory. It's just slightly harder than a camper shell to take off.

When buying anything with that age and mileage, I follow two rules. 1)Don't spend more than you can afford to lose. You never know how long something with 200,000 miles is going to last. Therefore, don't pay much. 2) Learn to wrench on it yourself. You can pay to have someone else do it, but it will no longer be more cost effective than getting something newer if you pay to have all of your mechanic work done. If you do it yourself, then it makes money sense to drive something like that. Notice that the guy has already monkeyed around with changing motors out, so I would not put a lot of faith in it being too reliable.

What john doe just said
Expect to pay around 4000 for a 4x4 and get anything inspected by a certified used car inspector ( not a state inspector ) before you drive it home.

Don't knock a Jeep!!!!! I LOVE MINE
I've had my Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4WD 8cyl w/ optional "off road package" for 7 years. I bought it brand new, and it has over 150,000 miles on it. It's been mudding, & deep in the Cuhutta forest & the Everglades swamp for those Jeep weekends. I don't want to brag - but NO MAJOR PROBLEMS. I've changed the battery, a tune up, and tires. The most problem is that the paint on the luggage rack has chipped off a little, and the plastic on the headlamps got cloudy.
And, I had a Jeep Sport 4WD before it. It also had no major problems.
I'm thinking about getting the new Wrangler with the optional hardtop. Sorry, but not interested in selling my old Jeep at this time.
