    Jeannie,

The witnesses schedule (unless they changed) a 'bible reading' assignment each week and are supposed to read it in advance of one of their meetings each week. They would make it all the way through the bible every couple of years. However, whatever reading of the scriptures they did was spun along the lines of the teachings of the f&ds. They are discouraged from reading the bible without the aid of the 'slave's' books or magazines.

Someone smarter than me posted on this board that (and I'm paraphrasing like crazy so I'm not sure of the exact numbers) the witnesses use 2% of the scriptures 98% of the time and 98% of the bible 2% of the time. Having been raised in the religion I would agree with that.

JW 'S believe "Time and unforseen occurances be fall all" and Jehovah does not controll what is going on right now but in the future he will kill everyone who is not a W. I was in that cult for to many years so good to be out.

They do believe God kills people. They definitely believe God would take someone's life. After my daughter Melanie left the Organization & got cancer ...I was told by many ( I was still a JW) that is why she got cancer because she left Jehovah ___ She did die-_ HE DID IT!!!!How wicked!!!
But I know now that we will have sickness & dying in this old world .... Just as the flowers, animals die etc: we are here for a while & then we move on to wherever.... Some feel to a better place, some feel to rot in the grave, some feel to suffer in the cutting off in Hell,,,,,, take your pick, My preference is HEAVEN>>>>

They do read the bible but are not allowed to read it and discuss it on it's own, it has to be with the use of the JW literature. People did used to have private study groups at one point but know very frowned upon

It seems that all humans have a different perspective and belief of who God is and what He is doing. I think He's in control of the whole universe but let's things occur on this planet because it was our plan to live on this earth the way we do, suffer the way we do and die at the time we planned. I believe that we do have a spiritual life that we lived before coming on this planet and will have again when we die and who knows where we will end up. That's my belief now after reading books from Sylvia Browne, because it makes a whole lot more sense to me than what any church teaches. Life is a mystery anyway. Nobody knows anything 100%, therefore, nobody can claim what is factual or fictional. We are free and have the privilege of believing what we want.

I'm going to use the Witness publication, "Reasoning from the Scriptures" to show how a Witness might reply, and to give the scriptures they may use to back their beliefs. If you want to get in to some deep discussions with your mom, why don't you ask if you can borrow that book? She might resist. Witnesses are trained to indoctrinate with introductory materials first before they get in to the "meat" of their doctrines.

As a trained bible student, you know there is more than one way to approach a scripture. The most important is to read it in context so that meaning is not lost. With preparation, you should be able to give your mom a run for her money.

Do they feel God knows the number of our days and takes us when it is time to go? My mom is a Jehovah Witness and I have heard her say that God would not take someone's life.

JW's don't believe in predestination. JW's believe that Satan is responsible for all the bad things that happen on earth, and God is patiently waiting for the day to make it all right.

    Cited scriptures in the Reasoning booklet - Genesis 2:17, Psalm 55:23 90:10, Proverbs 6:17 10:27 12:28, Ecc 3:1-2 7:17 9:11, John 6:40 17:3 (Reasoning, Fate, starting p. 138)

Thanks for all of your comments.

I am a Christian and believe that the Bible is God's actual words that he has had written down for us.I believe we were created and we are not here by chance. I believe that if we have a creator, our creator can easily get a message to us and I feel that is just what he did.

In reference to predestination, I believe that God is fully in control of what goes on. He is able to allow us free will in all of that because he knows all of the future. So in other words, whatever he wants to happen and not to happen, happens according to how he wants it to happen......and at the end of all of it, his eternal purpose for us will come forth. So really he is in control of everything that happens.

So......in reference to the Scriptures that were quoted to defend against predestination. All they mention ito preach against predestination is that our original parents sinned and they died in the day that they sinned, that we should cast our worries on the Lord and he will help us and not cause us to stumble. We live to be about 70 or 80 but are full of pride. That we have haughty eyes and a lying tongue. The fear of the Lord prolongs life but for the wicked it is shortened. Righteous get life. Evildoer gets death. There is a time for everything uder the sun. Do not be wicked or you could die before your time is up.Everyone who believes in Jesus will have eternal life.

So in a nutshell, all they quote from the Bbile is that we are sinners that live to about 80 and without believing in Jesus we die and we should cast all of our worries on the Lord. However, they do quote a scripture that says we can die before our time is up if we are wicked........how funny.....I wonder who causes us to die if we are wicked? Yes unforseen occurances occur to all of us..........they are only unforseen to us.......NOT God.

So not much here in proof that God is not involved in our life. I just think it is sad that they do not know how much God IS involved in our life with the good and the bad things that happen to us. They should know that and rejoice in it!!! I mean I can't read the Bible without seeing God's involvement in history on every page! To bad they don't see it in their lifves. It's nice to know God is right by your side in the good and bad of everything.
