FLIES

What is it about flies? I built a wildlife garden that is now thriving and you'd think the flies would be grateful - but what do they do, they keep biting my bald head that's what! I mean, after my recent illness you'd think they'd take pity on me but no, they insist on biting my pate. I now have to do the gardening and hang the washing out wearing a cap!

And what about those blasted horseflies? Once they pick your scent or movement up they follow you even into the house. The bite can turn into a large swelling so it's important to cleanse it immediately with an antiseptic.

And gnats! Bloomin' 'eck, why do they always go for me? I built a pond 5 years ago and the gnats are are always breeding. That's gratitude for you!

And bluebottles with their loud-sounding buzz which has the dogs' going mad trying to chase after them - and me running to cover all the food up quickly!

Thank goodness for the frogs, birds and bats here as they keep the numbers down (scratches head again as I type this).

Nature, you gotta love it. Hey...could always be worse. The south and southwestern USA have cockroaches to deal with. The state of Maine has black flies that bite along your hairline, you don't notce them biting until the blood starts dripping. NO JOKE...it's true.

there is always some sort of pest. Out here in the desert we have what are euphemistically called "date beetles" although they are really giant cockroaches, about three inches long. Yuck. And we have scorpions and vinegaroons and the other day I found a centipede wriggling its way around my bedroom. Our balance from nature is roadrunners. They eat date beetles and scorpions and vinegaroons and baby snakes - the best pest control you can have is a couple of roadrunners nesting in your yard. I actually have never seen a rattlesnake or a tarantula in all the years I have lived here, but I can't tell you how many scorpions and vinegaroons I have killed in the house.

yeah, they bite, if you aren't careful. And the bites are pretty bad, although only fatal to more vulnerable people like little kids and the elderly. Have to shake out my shoes before putting them on, look before I put my hands in a box, for instance. However, I have to admit that all the biting stinging things you put up with are probably more of a nuisance than the occasional scorpion.
