Pom, are you going to offer your interpretation of the angel's comment to Elizabeth, or have you abandoned this thread?

Do you not think that the thrust of the angel's message to Elizabeth--and to all of the readers of the Bible--was that anything was possible with God? He could do anything, absolutely anything he wanted, and that included making a barren women pregnant?

    Pom responds,

"For nothing [GOOD] is impossible with God."
The context is an old woman giving birth to a child.

Pom, you can't add words to a verse that God did not inspire his writer to put there. If God wanted his angel to tell us that it is impossible for God to do bad things, then God would have spelled that out for us. If you're arguing that the angel was making an incomplete statement, that he really wanted his readers to know that God could only do *good* things, why didn't he say that? How hard would it have been for God to have the angel say, "Nothing GOOD is impossible for God," if that's what God wanted us to know?

If Pom is right about the angel not saying exactly what the readers were meant to hear, and that we have to imagine an extra word ("good") squeezed into the sentence, then it's clear that Pom is admitting that this Bible verse is not literally true.

"Literally" means "word for word", exactly as it reads, not figuratively, not metaphorically, but exactly word for word what is written. The words say "For nothing is impossible with God," but, according to Pom we can't take these words literally; we have to add a word that is not there to get the "correct" meaning.

Excellent post Joseph. You really seemed to have flustered Pom. If God desires ALL to be saved (I know it's in a scripture somewhere), why is he causing the hearts of some to harden? Seems to be contradictory and extemely unloving of God.

Go therefore and baptize the people in the name of the father and of the son... what the hell, we just need to bring up the yearbook numbers!

Pom's meltdown above reminds me of the 1960's Star Trek episode in which Spock deliberately fed the alien computer information which would not correlate with data in its memory banks. It kept repeating, "Does not compute, Does not compute,..." in increasingly frantic, but weaker, tones as it slowly wound itself down, started smoking, and went silent.

    Joseph,
That is the most classic meltdown by Pom that I have ever seen on this board.

    I tell you the truth,
    I tell you the truth,
I tell you the truth, etc. etc.

Seriously, your information was great. I wish I had the time to spend finding the inconsistancies (SP?) in the bible that you find.

    Way to go joseph.

I imagine even a scriptures such as the ot contains, where god asks for volunteers from his spirits to go against ahab. A spirit volunteers to lie to him through prophets. God blesses the lying spirit and sends it to do it's dirty work on ahab. Even scriptures such as this wouldn't change the pomegranit's belief that god don't lie. Amazing.
