I went on a hunting trip last month for "White rednecks". The white meat is really tender right off the grill. I usually add a little hot sauce to spice it up. I have about 60 lbs. left in the standup freezer.

"inherently gloomy about the prospect of Alabama" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours -- whereas all the testing says not really."

Well would you look at that...one little change and all the sudden no one is offended. Isn't getting offended a choice? Isn't anyone else kind of put off by how quickly people are hushed up if they happen to say anything negative about a powerful enough minority?

There are so many things that are more important.

This is a "straw man" false argument. Nobody has ever said this about "Alabama". When you speak about Alabama, you're speaking of a state with a mixture of racial backgrounds. The statement about Africa implies that people with large doses of melanin in their skin are somehow inferior.

Yes there has been institutionalized racism in the deep south of America, including Alabama. The economic problems are real and many have been searching for real answers for a long time. If somebody were to come into our country and say the people of Alabama had problems because they were less intelligent, they would (or should) be laughed right off stage. We have a poster here named Snowbird from Alabama, whose intelligence I respect very much. Oh, BTW she happens to have an abundance of melanin in her skin. She was born into poverty but is not so now because she applied herself to her work. Anybody making sweeping generalizations about a culture or a region deserves scorn for simple-mindedness. Even if they have won a Nobel prize. Especially if they have won a Nobel prize.

    Why thank you, Gopher.

I've always had a love of learning, and I passed that on to my children and grandchildren.

Anyone with a semblance of honesty knows that Blacks in America were at one time denied the most basic rights.

That legacy lives on and we see the results in the angst that is part and parcel of being Black.

It takes hard work and firm determination to rise above this legacy, but it can be done.

Now as to Professor Watson's remarks about Africa, apparently he subscribes to the same mindset as did the 2nd president of the WTS, that people of color are inherently inferior to those with an insufficiency of melanin in their skin.

well in defense of the statements of the guy, I'm in NM now and getting really dark because of the altitude, etc...and I definitely feel dumber these days.

It looks like the thread is getting pretty intelligent responses to me.

Oh it's all right. Just study and work twice as hard, you'll be fine.

I agree that, as a whole, blacks are more sensitive than whites about racist remarks. Hmmmm...... could it have something to do with their introduction to this country through bondage and hundreds of years of slavery? followed by years of oppression? that legacy COULD tend to make a people sensitive.

Since Gopher mentioned yours truly, here's a link to my growing up story:

As he stated, I grew up in a poverty-stricken community. Educational opportunities were almost nil, but we overcame with hard work, determination, and ingenuity.

Things are so different and much better now.

Hmmmm It COULD have something to do with the fact that I'm working on my masters in Sociology... Want me to post some references for you to read up on?

Like I would just make something like that up...
