Some people can't help it due to dyslexia (ironic that that's such a hard word to spell don't you think?). Others may not have had such a good education due to family/schooling problems or due to not applying themselves properly as Armageddon was around the corner. Give some slack here surely? I'd hate to think people wouldn't post here because they''re worried someone is going to pick on their grammar and spelling.

    Clam the impeckable speller.

Someone please refresh me on the proper way to punctuate the following

    It is Johns' birthday

    John's coming over

We had four Johns in our congregation

    Did I write them correctly?

    It is Johns' birthday

Should be "It is John's birthday."

It's a singular possessive - The birthday belonging to John.

If you were talking about two cats eating dinner, you would write, "That is the cats' food." Plural possessive.

    I can punctuate, I just can't spell!

My father was a perfectionist, a very controlling one at that. He always checked my homework for neatness and spelling errors. The "plus side" was that I always got "A"s in English essays and book reports all through high school and developed good skills in this area which have been most helpful to me in many situations.

The "negative side" of living in a very cotrolling atmospehere with a domineering perfectionist---was that I quit school at 17---the summer I was to enter my Senior year---ran away, went to another state and eloped to get out of the house; resulting in a bad marriage and a big mistake).

I practically cringe when I see a lot of bad spelling, (although posting on a discussion board is NOT a literary work)----BUT---I also cringe when I see someone comment on someone else's spelling.....it reminds me of my father's demand for perfection.

I try to ignore spelling errors here but sometimes I can't resist if they are funny or can make an amusing pun. I am a confessed pun junky.

It can be quite critical though. . . .

    Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is all about.
You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not
like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have
ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no
feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever
happy--will you let me be yours?
