All those toys were recalled from China because of lead paint. Dishes from China have lead paint . We got rid of all our cups and dishes from China. Now drinking coffee out of glass cups and like them a lot. They don't care if they poison all of us.

Did you see the report where the Chineese put paper into their breads for Chinese consumption?

I suppose China, can be a scape-goat, but in most industrialize countries the treatment of animals is pretty bad, it all stems from our collective view point which is predominately, that humans are superior species among all the species. To me it is similar to racism, call it speciesism or whatever.
One thing to me that seems to be a very good trend, is that more and more people are talking about and thinking seriously about the wrongness of our treatment of fellow humans and other species. In the past, were in ignorance of the cruelty, but thanks to concerned people and their efforts to make the general public aware. I think the more discussions we have, the greater the awareness and the more hope we have. Good topic BTW.

Skeeter, that report about cardboard buns turned out to be a hoax staged by a chinese journalist looking for publicity.

Up until the early 20th century, the wealth of America was built on the back of child and slave labor.
Push that a little closer, my friend. My mother and father split up when I was a young shaver. We sharecropped (google it) until the mid 1960's. We children went to the cotton fields in late August and didn't come out until early November. There was no other work available; we had to pitch in and do our part.
We made many a plantation owner richer; we barely broke even; but that's the way it was.

You are so right! Up until this point I was blissfully unaware....until last nights news cast. I started researching, getting more and more angry about the situation, and open trade with China.
Then I started looking at the tags around the house. The dog toys, outside furniture, dishes, decorative items, inside furniture, rugs, small appliances, pool items....I was mortified. I then started checking food labels. Thankfully I am careful to buy fresh fruit and vegs from local growers. We don't eat frozen fish and if we buy shrimp etc., I like it to be from Florida.
I never knew what all the fuss and bother was with Walmart. I didn't care, I don't shop there.....now I know.
Education is the key. Many will not give a rat's a$$ about what they are buying as consumers, but I do, and I may not make a dent but enough people start caring, (or get sick) from food or toys it will eventually make a difference.
I will be researching all the candidates for president on this issue.

Marmot...
You have complained about the U.S. and Britain but your country is no better.

Please get over justifying bad behaivor by any nation in this day and age by the past history of others.
This is the information age... everyone, everywhere knows that abuse of animals or humans is destructive to the entire planet, both having eventual huge ramifications.
China needs reigning in and I hope the next U.S. President will do such. Other national leaders need to do the same. To excuse the behaivor of a present regime based on passed history of former nations doesn't cut it.
Shall we let a new Nazi nation start up again.....because they are in a new phase of developement and don't know what they are doing?
Your statement:
Guess what, America and Britain used to be like that too. Okay, maybe they didn't have bears with drip-tubes, but think about the history of western culture. Entire species were almost wiped out during various stages of technological advancement and colonial expansion.
Whales almost went extinct so that people could have lamp oil and corsets.
Beavers were slaughtered by the millions to fuel a felt hat fashion trend that lasted more than a century and whose aftereffects shaped North America.
Bison were pushed to the brink of extinction first to supply leather for drive belts during the industrial revolution, and then just as a big f**k you to the plains people to see if they could drive THEM to extinction also.
Up until the early 20th century, the wealth of America was built on the back of child and slave labor.
Industrialization, mass consumption, globalization and a disposable lifestyle has led to America becoming hated among many developing countries.
Now the Chinese are in their own bratty child phase of development and the western world feels threatened.
Karma's a bitch.

Yes, I saw the program. No words for the disgust I felt when the show completed. What a shithole!
Had America not given free trade status to China, things might have been different, but now it's too late. Wait until China begins to collect their amount of the trade inbalance, and pulls in their markers. We'll see who will be doing slave labor.

I started looking around the house and I can't believe how much is from China. I don't know how, but I am going to avoid buying anything from China if I can help it.
r.
I used to boycott Chinese products, too. Since all the food scares, I am definitely avoiding any food products or gifts for kids that come from China. Part of the reason for all the recent recalls is that so much of our stuff is being imported from there; more stuff with difficulty regulating it = more recalls.
It is very disturbing, although I did not see the show.
It's not surprising that they have such an abysmal issue with animal rights, when you study their terrible record on human rights, no?
Unfortunately, boycotting Chinese goods may do just as much harm as good in the world; it's a very tough call.
There are really some terrible problems there (and all over), and I don't want to support making more problems by buying things that are practically made by slave labor.
Making good buying decisions in this economy is a depressing challenge at times, but there really are a few good options.
R - are you familiar with 10,000 Villages? You might want to check that out.
Also, SERVV International (I think they changed their name)?
Google up "fair trade" and you may find some helpful ideas!
