the congregation are just one big family and that we should be teaching our children to love the brothers and sisters in the congregation.

This raises a very important point - the WT talks about love as something you teach people to have. They talk of a principled love, an obligation to those in the congregation etc. And that's the problem - genuine love is an EMOTION, and one does not need to be taught to have it or apply it since one either FEELS it or not.

Now, for me the problem was this; Every time I went to the meetings or out in field service, there was always some scandal going on. Folk gossiping or bitching about others. Cliques being formed. Elders disagreeing and pioneers falling out with each other.

That sounds like our JW family. Every time my husband talks to his Dad it's nothing but doom and gloom. Never any good news or encouragement. Just a bunch of drama and gossip about who's not doing what they should be doing. I don't know how anyone can continue to live like that. They are the most miserable people I have ever seen and I know it drives them crazy that we are so happy and content.

I felt like i was in a strait jacket whenever i was at a gathering, especially when there were the ultra spritual ones that, made you feel conscientious about even farting in the toilet when in their presence.

I hated going to gatherings in the end and preferred to be with people i could totally relax with and let my hair down a bit, whether it be work mates or worldly family.
