Have any of you subscribed to this or a similar service? Some $29.95 for a year subscription, $39.95 for lifetime.

I was trying to find out stuff about a guy I was dating. I signed up to find absolutely nothing about him. Later on, I couldn't find him after he was supposed to go to court (very long story involving his ex-wife and child support) so I called the jail and they said, "He hasn't been incarcerated since 1998" .. OOOOH ... well .. I guess that people search that I paid extra for criminal record did no good ... (he got dumped after that incident)

I was investigating someone's background about 7 years ago or so, and used a site called www.knowx.com with a reasonable amount of success. At the time, they offered options for per use search or annual subscription. Since I was only interested in busting one @$$hole at the time, I was more than happy to pay the $6.95 they wanted, which ended up confirming all my suspicions.

With sites like peoplefinder.com they collect info form bills, magazine subscriptions, etc. $15.00 for 24 hours.

You can get a lot of information without paying anything from this site:

    Nope.

I put in my own name. To be able to see the results I have to pay 9,95.

    BS iow.

A lot of the information you'll get from those sites will be worthless, unless you're lucky.
You can always do a search in the area of the person you're wanting to "look into" for free. If you're looking for court records just do a search of their name in the county court records- which is usually easily accessed online, same thing as if your looking for address or phone information. If you know the county they live in, you can look at the public records of the parcels online. That's the best way to start. If you use those search sites (the online pay ones) you're likely to get information that's not necessarily accurate.

    RollerDave: nope, absolutely not.

We did net detective and it was lousy. just about anything we REALLY wanted to find, had instructions how to go to the courthouse and get it, for a fee. only with some cause. which we didn't have.

RD, I should have waited to hear from you. Instead, I signed up for Net Detective -- did a few searches -- then wrote them an email back to cancel. Here's a copy of my email to them:

    Hello,
I just joined this evening and I’m quite disillusioned. In only two searches I’ve been told that additional subscription fees are required. This is not what expected.

    The first one:
"...There is a $10 processing fee to access this database. (You will have 3 full days of unlimited access.)
    The second one:
"...to have continuous monthly access to the Law Enforcement Edition for $29.95 per month."

Please advise what I need to do in order to cancel. Otherwise, I will have to advise my DiscoverCard account. Len Miller

Thanks to all for your comments. It looks to me that this $29.95 annual fee service is merely a front door. Other doors are there to open, but for a fee. I may be wrong but I needed to go no further.

    Hi Scully,

Your research wouldn't by any chance have had to do with someone here at JWD would it?

    Hi Avengers,

Well, yes you have to pay money to get the full information, but the free results showing that a particular name is associated with certain cities and towns, as well as the person's age (sometimes listed, not always) is useful.

Here is a website I recently found out about:

    http://www.voompeople.com/processor.asp

Not only does it provide information about the person, but also lists names of people possibly related to the person. Can be useful for verifying that a person is really the person you are looking for.
