Yeah, tell me all about it. I'm the regular Christian and Sunday School teacher. I'm married to the Witness wannabe who waited SIX YEARS to be approved for field service.
The snorts, the rolled eyes, "you are not a real Christian", "you don't believe in Paradise, you think you are going to heaven (snort)", yadda yadda. You know what bugs him most? Our freedom. Young people can come to church in jeans. Ties are not required. Hair lengths, whatever. Guitars on stage. Play time for children. Evangelism is not tracked or mandated, but optional. Grandmas can bake cookies and pray, if that's what their calling is.
My drug-addicted son can go to church and be welcomed, hugged, prayed for, and accepted. At least for a few hours a week.
All that ranting about our final destination is smoke-screen. It's not what motivates me, and he never heard it from me. I think it's an indication that he's terrified I might be right. It also shows what his motivation (carrot) is. Me, my joy comes from partnering with Christ daily, becoming better and kinder. I am who God would have me to be, and that is the richness I carry every day. You could say that heaven has come down to earth for me.
Why pay any attention to me and what I am doing if he is sure he's right? There's a strong thread of jealousy in his protests.
You know how I get his goat and grudging admiration? I bring home my colorful Sunday School materials. They are bright, relevant, and with big spaces for open-ended questions. Just lately I showed him the latest evangelism bible. Even though he snorted that it's "inferior" to the Watchtower materials, he dearly wants to own one. I told him he can't have it, it's intended for someone coming to Christ.
