Bumble Bee
Mmmmm, brings back memories of my childhood. There was one drive in resturant in the small town I grew up in, and we'd stop there after going to the park and swimming for a root beer float!

I heard on the radio that a "big black cow" is another name for a root beer float.
Here are the lyrics for "Big Black Cow" by Steely Dan
In the corner
Of my eye
I saw you in Rudy's
You were very high
You were high
It was a cryin' disgrace
They saw your face
On the counter
By your keys
Was a book of numbers
And your remedies
One of these
Surely will screen out the sorrow
But where are you tomorrow
I can't cry anymore
While you run around
Break away
Just when it
Seems so clear
That it's
Over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here
Down to Greene Street
There you go
Lookin' so outrageous
And they tell you so
You should know
How all the pros play the game
You change your name
Like a gangster
On the run
You will stagger homeward
To your precious one
I'm the one
Who must make everything right
Talk it out till daylight
I don't care anymore
Why you run around
Break away
Just when it
Seems so clear
That it's
Over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here -

They are even better with home brewed root beer. I substitute 2/3 of the sugar with honey and add 2 Tbls of real vanilla extract. It tastes just like Thomas Kemper.

No, really. Here's a recipe for a BLACK COW SODA link: http://www.massrecipes.com/recipes/04/09/blackcowsoda750.html
Black Cow Soda
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
10 oz. root beer
1 Tbs. chocolate syrup
1-1/2 oz. whipped cream
Maraschino cherry
Pour root beer over ice cream and chocolate syrup in a large tumbler
glass. Garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Serve with
a straw and a long spoon. -

Do you have to use fresh cows or can you get by with dehydrated?

All the variations are good. Just don't forget that everything comes together in an ice cold state (like Minnesota) so that you get little frozen root beer/ice cream bits.
