In respect for the men's long friendship, have your husband give his friend whatever gift you choose for the BABY, with the comment "Wife isn't going to make it to the shower, but she wanted junior to have this. . ."
The kids may all be friends for years, and try not to hold their parents (esp. the mom) against them.

I had another thought:
There's a second-hand shop near my place (Salvation Army runs it) and the last 3 or 4 times I've visited the store (this is since May of this year), I've seen this HUGE stuffed Pokemon doll - a Pikachu, I think - for $5. Nobody has bought it, because it has a spot of vomit on it. I would totally get that for someone who hates me. I may even try to get rid of the vomit stain before I give it to them, depending on my mood.
