Kapersky, for example, is selling them seperately.

I use antivir and zonealarm, myself. Both are free. Norton stuff is hard to uninstall. You might need the removal tool - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe

Yes, Kapersky sells them seperately or as a suite. Most other vendors used to, and perhaps still do. It's been a while since I used Symantec or McAfee. I'd stay away from Symantec products. They seem to have a bad habit of buying up other companies and ruining the products they've acquired. (Ghost, Act, winfax, and talkworks come to mind)

As previously mentioned, AVG antivirus and Zone alarm firewall are free and have good reputations. Adaware and spybot are good for spyware removal.

I haven't found a good anti spam solution yet, other than to be very careful with my email address.

I've had Mcaffe for 10 years but the past couple of months the virus scan has been disabled and they do not respond to help me enable it. So I cant recommend Mcaffee.

They have no problem responding when its time to send their bill every year.

I use defender pro 10 n 1 has it all.

I have another program on my other systems that I cannot remember the name to. I bought from fry's it works up to three computers, for about $50 and you get a second year for free.

Norton slows your computer and takes a lot of memory and is annoying to set up because at first you have to okay each program and you have to know when you are wanting your computer to go somewhere or if you are being hacked and tracked.

I'm using AVG - you can get it free but I've purchased the whole package now (AV, spyware, firewall etc). I think it works on the same detection theory as BA mentioned - I know it sometimes finds 'false positives' with some of my Toshiba laptop configurations.

One thing to mention though - if you try the AVG you need to completely uninstall your Norton first because they do not like each other!!

I have worked on many pc's that have AVG/AVAST ... they haved failed to detect all the viruses that are out there. FREE does not mean GREAT.

You can download a 30 day trial of Kaspersky just to make sure your antivirus is doing a good job.

WAC had recommended Kaspersky to me a while back and I am using it - the 7.0 version and I really like it. It doesn't have a firewall but an excellent AV and anti-spyware. I was using AVG free download anti-virus and it was good. It picked up 4 or 5 trojans that my mother had on her computer but there was one on my computer it didn't get. I got Kaspersky and it was able to pick it up. I dont want Kaspersky or any other Security Suite - just antivirus and antispyware. I will just use my WinXP firewall for now. Kaspersky doesn't bog your system down either.
