Welcome, GoodnessGracious!
No, a man can still be an elder or whatever with an unbelieving wife. Even if the wife is a JW and is DF'd or inactive, it doesn't affect his elder-ship.
If there is a problem with his kids, though, then he will probably be asked to step down.

Thanks for the welcome everyone
I am in such disbelief that he is going back, and he doesnt think anything is gonna change
Im gonna tell him to talk to one of his brothers or elders and ask them how easy it will be to be married to an independent thinking wordly woman LOL
I mean I will probably go with him a sunday here and there, but am I giving up my time during the week after working 8 plus hours a day .. uh uh... no way... no how LOL ...

UBM - unwanted bowel movement, untrained brain matter, utlimate bran muffin???
And if one has untrained brain matter, might it not cause you to eat the ultimate bran muffin, not knowing it could bring on an unwanted bowel movement?

It's always been a bit of an enigma considering how a husband's headship is supposed to be exercized over the wife. If the kids are bad, it is viewed that the elder doesn't have his household under control, and therefore isn't qualified. If they didn't get in trouble for it, I'm sure they would enforce the same policy concerning "bad" wives. But the feminists would eat them up...as they should.

Actually, I think whether or not a man can attain "elder" status with a non believing wife, is very much dependant on the kingdom hall and congregation involved. You get some hardcore halls with all married elders who's wives pioneer, he'll never have a chance in hell of being an elder. Not so much because he isn't exercising his "headship" properly, but they like to socialize among their own, so in those congregations, fellow buddies most often get nominated to edlerhood, whose wives are service partners and all that crap.

I think it has a lot to do with if you end up with an "unbelieving mate" by choice or circumstance. For instance, there are JWD members who left the organization after they married. Their spouses will likely be treated with sympathy. Then there are men like my husband who married me on the sly without the elder's say-so. He is treated with mistrust.
I know my hubby will never make it past pioneer.
Just to understand (and exJW's correct me if I'm wrong), the progression of "responsibility" runs from publisher --> pioneer --> Ministerial Servant --> Presiding Overseer --> Circuit Overseer.
Women can rise to publishers and pioneers, can do dramas and skits on stage, but never speak from the podium.
Do any of you on JWD know of a PO who had an "unbelieving mate"?

Okay, so he has an unbaptized mate. No problem!
He can still eat crackers, right?
He can still drink wine, right?
Bam, can move up to be the next Mrs. Jesus Christ after he dies.
Er, seriously, as already mentioned, it will depend to a great extent on the local body and the Circuit Overseer. If there are already 8 hotsy-totsy elders, they'll keep him out. If there are only 2 elders, he may be in, no problem.
