Elsewhere,
That TomTom demo you gave me was so great I couldn't resist! No I didn't take yours, and I'm really sorry for your loss and the vehicle damage.
When we left Dallas, I ordered one, a refurbished Nuvi 350, over the internet. Gertrude, that's the pet name we gave it, took us flawlessly on our 8,600 miles road trip through Western Canada, Western U.S. and home again. Gertrude didn't miss an alley, a McDonald's, a Wal-mart, or a Best Western (those phone numbers are great when you're tired and 30 minutes away from where you want to lay your head.)
Before our trip I frequented the GPS navigator forum with several of my questions. I saw one tip seemed to keep popping up -- security. These things seem to be magnets to thieves. Even with the GPS hidden, if you have a suction mount on the inside of your windshield, they know what that is and will break whatever to look inside for it. The solution? Get a bean bag mount. We did just that. They're about $25 nowadays, maybe lower. It's weighted, has a rubber non-slip base that conforms to your dash.
When we went in for lunch I'd place it on the floor and cover it with my bro-in-laws cap (not completely secure, I know). At night, however, it went into the trunk or our motel room.
Not that sis-in-law's car didn't go undamaged during that trip. A mule deer with a large rack attacked the driver's side front fender and door. $1,800 damage.
