Hey Orb,

The penny drops, Ranchette! Of course, this is what it's all about - if they can get their "we're so family friendly" ads out before Dateline, perhaps they can undermine its impact. I hope that isn't the real reason, though; that is shallow thinking at its worst!
Steph, isn't shallow thinking a hallmark of JWism?
Those family friendly commercials that the Mormons do work really well. I am surprised the JWs did not start this a long time ago. Although I know that they did not do the TV stuff for many years because they did not want to be put in the same boat as the Bakers. Of course, when it comes to state sales taxes they do not mind hanging out with the likes of Swaggert.
In any case, that is interesting.

Steph,
Their plan may be to undermine the Dateline show, but just like all their other recent stunts it will not bring the desired results.
Only Jw's are that gulible!
Therefore those comercials will mainly serve as nothing more than damage control for current members.
Every other thinking person will be wondering why the JW family life Pr commercial came just before the devestating truth about how Wt policy hurts JW children and their families on Dateline?
Too fishy!!
It's actually entertaining to sit back and see what they do next.

Actually, I think airing their commercials before Dateline airs might backfire. No one really knows what JW's are all about, and for them to air commercials with the "wonderful family", only for Dateline to air what really happens to families - who are the average joe american gonna believe? Give them alot more to talk about at the door for sure though.
Here is what some JW's on WOL db are saying about the commercial.

koolami WOL Runner posted 10-31-2001 03:17 PM From what i've read on a JW mailing list, the commercial is being trialed in the NE part of the US. This is what 1 person said"It was short but very nice. It showed 4 scriptures about Love, Love never fails being one of them. It shows a couple getting married and then a family around a campfire and then a couple walking down the beach. It was only 45 second long. At the end it says: For more information call .... An 800 number. and it ended with the words: "from the congregation of Jehovah witnesses."
Marlon WOL Crawler posted 11-01-2001 01:41 AM sounds interesting! As has been said Jehovah's org. has in the passed used many avenues to advertise the Good news. TV adds have been known to sell products. If this is true then this is this best product people could buy. Please keep us posted
Brian WOL Stepper posted 11-01-2001 08:58 AM It is interesting to see how Jehovah's organization keeps moving. With increasing nationalism in this and other countries, the timing of this most likely couldn't be better. People seem to persecute what they do not understand. I know some may feel that advertising is a step down but the faithful slave most certainly has had discussion upon discussion as well as prayer upon prayer deciding how to go about this. We can be assured with Jehovah's blessing that this will have wonderful results!Besides there was a time when we likely never expected the organization to have a website but look at the results that has led to over the years. This will be exciting!
Caramel posted 11-01-2001 11:55 AM Hmm this is a very interesting time. I'd always kinda laugh at the other church commercials I would see on tv. Now that the Society is airing their own I just feel really weird about it.
Not only could the ads show people the truth about what we believe but it could serve as a topic for discussion. We could ask the householder what he thought of the ad and take it from there.

I find all of this very interesting! Let’s face it, when the government or a public health organization wants to alert the population of an important news item, perhaps a need to take precautions or some other action, what do they do? Yes! They use the mass medium of television. Why? Because they know there is no better way to reach the masses with what they consider a crucial message. This has been done for years here in Australia, government sponsored commercials about the dangers of drink driving, breast cancer, skin cancer, drug abuse etc,. So why shouldn’t the greater government via the “faithful and discreet slave†class use this very same medium to let the masses know about something of greater importance that will solve all of the world’s woes, including the ones mentioned above. I think it is a public service to the superlative degree. Perhaps many that will watch it may feel more inclined to listen to us next time we knock on their door. Let’s face it a lot of people do not open the door to us because of what others have told them about us. Usually other people have either told them lies or misrepresented us in some way. So hearing it directly from Jehovah’s Witnesses via their television may well be what’s needed for some to talk to us and ask questions when we call. Others may live in areas that seldom get a witness, or they may never be home when we call. If it saves just one is it worth it? The heavens certainly think so, for there is great rejoicing in heaven over one sinner that repents. I would like to see it. So if anyone knows if it’s roaming around the net, please direct me to the link. It would be most appreciated. As who knows when or even if it will ever arrive to Australia.
CandleintheSand WOL Crawler posted 11-01-2001 07:34 PM Agreeing with Joseph here! Good comments! No doubt the faithful and discreet slave has given this avenue of making Jehovah's name and purposes known quite a bit of prayerful consideration. Television, as we know, comes right into the home, no door to hide behind! And one never knows what a family is experiencing at the moment the TV ad is done. It could touch a heart at that moment, making that person want to know more or be more receptive at the door. I know I won't be able to contain my excitment if I see it on TV! Maybe we'll know more in an upcoming KM? Hope so!

A couple of thoughts,
I seems to me that if the Dateline show is not in final form, a good contrast they could enter into the production would be the family thing in the JW commercial contrasted with the harsh reality that the program exposes.
Ranchette,
Your sample of the dialogue at WOL, reminds me of something I have thought about the JWs for a long time. If you ask a JW what they think about belief x they will tell you with great confidence, then they read their Watchtower an hour later, then without skipping a beat, they now have belief y with equal confidence.
In the case of TV. "Oh no, that is wrong. Oh, we are doing it? It is right."
I noticed that also, Larc. Pretty funny actually, but so typical. Perhaps they could get some sort of infomercial put together to sell a "starter packet of study materials" or something....for a small "donation" of $99.99.
I mentioned this to my husband and 18 year old this morning and asked my son his thoughts on this. His reply was that it seems like JW's are trying to be like all the other religions.
I also mentioned it to my mother and she was a little taken back but then she said that Jehovah would take care of it if it was not the right thing to do. Also, that we must really be getting close to the end.
Puke, Puke!
Edited to correct grammar.
