I don't know as much about computers as the rest of you but I used to have that problem and found out that sometimes you have to start the computer in safe mode before running the antivirus program. Esp. McAfee and Norton, neither of which I use any more.

Good point about running in safe mode. Problem with is that some virus can load themselves in safe mode thus you can't get rid of them.

I use a program called mini-PE (you didn't hear it from me) to delete these ones manually.

always remember to backup your data first!

That's what just happened to my home computer. I couldn't figure out how to get into it, but I knew there was away. I finally just went to a restore point and was able to clean up from there.

Sorry for your troubles JAG you may have been hi-jacked by a Trojan while surfing the net ,

some anti - virus programs can't locate and delete a persistent Trojan that typically attachés it's self to your browser.

One piece of software that is very good in doing this is Spyware Doctor by PC tools, it did what the other programs couldn't do

    when ever I was hi-jacked.

The first thing I would do in your case is see what programs are starting up when you boot your system.

Open up run in control panel or if it's in your start menu and type in msconfig and press enter , a new set of windows should open with tabs ,

open the tab that has startup programs, there will be a list of programs that will start when you boot up your computer

Look carefully at what is checked and uncheck anything you don't recognize and is suspicious,

when finished press OK and restart your computer.

There are other Trojan finding software that you could try too, try searching for them on google......good luck

I was just wondering that once a virus makes a computer protected, so that you can't get into the registry even with an administrator account, what do you use to regain control of the system?

Damn! You locked out of your registry? I believe there are programs that can change the rights to the registry. Is this your problem???

I noticed about a month ago I could not go back to any earlier dates and restore my system.

So maybe something has taken over.

I am doing better the last 10 minutes since I emptied my cookies and temporary files.

I have done that before and the problem seems to come back but I havent been hijcaked since I read abandonded advice to delete cookies and temporie files.

If something has taken over my computer how do I erase everything and reinstall windows? Does anyone know?

Thanks everyone for your help. I have to go to work now. I will check back tomorrow and work on it some more.

Yeah, that's what happened. I was so frustrated. I never did get into the registry until I restored. But, after restoring, I was able to run the cleaner for UD and that let me back in.

Oh, and after your mini-pe advice, I found this: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

    What do you think?

Sorry, Jag, if it looks like I'm hijacking your thread, but I think this information is probably related and beneficial for all of us.....
