That's a great, excellent point oompa!

-I feel like I'm honing my skills as an "Ex-JW Heavyweight" every day from reading this forum.

Good catch Oompa. I have used that argument (omitting the bible verse) with hubby. He was going on and on about holdiays and I said, what do you care about origins? Your religion was founded by some guy from Pennsylvania and they even used to celebrate Christmas... I got the pat JW response, "we don't do that now". Origins only matter to JW's when it's someone elses origins.

It's weird how that mind-set grabs JWs, that history really doesn't matter. I was in counseling with hubby and he didn't want to talk about our history that had gotten us into therapy...root cause type stuff, because that was "done". They train their minds to only look at "present truths" and that's all they can see.

One easy answer Oompa...no doubt a dub would say something to the effect, "sometimes you have to learn from your mistakes, then build the house correctly". Though this is flawed logic it no doubt would be the excuse, they built, it got destroyed and with the "new light" they are now built on a solid foundation! Or they will use the, "it was built right, but the builder was not adept enough at foundations" something like that.

But they are "God's only channel on earth", in what is arguably (in their perspective) the most important time in mankind's history - it all leads up to this. You'd think God Himself at least would get it right through His people, then. After all - since the Bible is perfect and infallible (...ahem...), He obviously has the 'power' to do that, as He did in the past, imperfect humans or not (or Jesus would, as it were).

Considering that the organization's "foundation" is a pyramid in Egypt, they have a lot of room to talk!

When it comes to their own origins in C T Russell's Bible Students sincerity seems to be the key to gaining God's approval :

    * re chap. 19 p. 118 par. 15 Sealing the Israel of God **

*Nevertheless, does not natural Israel today merit some special favor? In the period just prior to the Lord’s day, when sincere Bible students were rediscovering many of the basic truths of God’s Word, it was thought that with the ending of the Gentile Times the Jews would again enjoy a privileged standing before God.

    *** bh chap. 8 pp. 84-85 par. 23 What Is God’s Kingdom? ***

    23

For how long? During the 19th century, sincere Bible students calculated that the waiting period would end in 1914. (Regarding this date, see the Appendix, pages 215-18.) World events that began in 1914 confirm that the calculation of these sincere Bible students was correct.

    *** g75 4/8 p. 15 When the Answer Will Become Reality ***

Long before the outbreak of the first world war, sincere Bible students, now known world wide as Jehovah’s Christian witnesses, called attention to 1914 as the starting point of tremendous trouble for the present ungodly world.

    *** w81 3/1 p. 26 Do You Appreciate the "Faithful and Discreet Slave"? ***

" By the early 1870’s there was a group of sincere Bible students sufficiently well fed spiritually to be in expectation of the Lord’s return

But do they apply the same rule to others? What did we used tt say to householders who sincerely believed in their religion?

    *** w03 2/1 p. 32 Sincerity—Desirable, but Is It Enough? ***

For our worship to be acceptable to God, sincerity is not only desirable but also essential. Yet, note that sincerity alone is not enough. It must be complemented with truth.

The builders and the passengers of the Titanic might sincerely have believed that the ocean liner was unsinkable. On its maiden voyage in 1912, however, it struck an iceberg and 1,517 people lost their lives. Certain first-century Jews might sincerely have believed in their way of worshiping God, but their zeal was "not according to accurate knowledge." (Romans 10:2) For us to be acceptable to God, our sincere beliefs must be based on accurate information. Jehovah’s Witnesses in your community will be happy to assist you in examining what is involved in serving God with sincerity and truth.
