He may have taken the edge off of staunch, strict , a-hole tendencies of J.F. Rutherford . Any comedy would have helped with him as president of the society ! A very secret closed society at that ! Hi Flipper, Haven't been here for a while because of my mother but I'm glad that people like you are keeping these issues, such as the child abuse in the forefront. I keep these threads in a folder for future references. Hopefully I will be able to show my mother my findings and I thank you and all those who contributed.
I felt the Charlie Chaplin movie shows the absurdity, to the extreme, of controlling people by keeping them busy with mindless tasks. I thought it was funny when he went for a smoke and couldn't even have privacy in the bathroom, big brother watching their every move.
My understanding is that Rutherford was ruthless and probably had no sense of humour. But who knows maybe he did, in a sadistic way could he have been laughing at all the people that followed "him"?

I too was made to feel guilt for using the potty room in the kingdom hall , I always felt elders would look at you weird when I'd have to go to the restroom ! Like, they'd be thinking , " get back to your seat and learn and be indoctrinated " ! My kids are all grown, but these days if I was still a witness and had children, I guarantee they would not go to the restroom alone- what with all the pervie elders and pedophiles in the org. ! Good post. This is a big part of the problem, however, many JW's even after hearing all the other information still remain loyal to the org because they rationalise the problems away, telling themselves that the organisation is not perfect, apostates blow the mistakes all out of proportion and although an imperfect org it is still the closest to the truth than any other religion by far.

MUST OBEY- Well, the governing body can claim anything they want . I mean, you know, Ted Jaracz can claim he is Jesus Christ come back in the flesh too, but that does not make it so. Jehovah's Witnesses may claim the child abuse cases are being exaggerated , but the fact remains there is plenty of court documentation explaining what took place in these abuse cases that is fact- not fiction. But , of course the governing body would never let Jehovah's Witnesses see that information either, and I go back to my first reason why- the Watchtower society has Jehovah's Witnesses under " information control" blackout. They are prevented from seeing necessary information . They can't make a decision on what they aren't informed about

I agree Flipper, but most JW's are still prepared to overlook these faults because they rationalise they must still be the true religion since only they have Jehovah's name, reject the trinity, reject the immortal soul/hell teachings, believe in the future paradise earth, etc. They feel that while there may be a few jokers in their pack, they still hold the trump cards doctrinally over other religions.
JW's suffer from a similar syndrome as beaten wives do who are psychologically incapable of leaving their physically & mentally abusive mate. They rationalise all his bad qualities away and exaggerate his good qualities in their minds, reasoning to themselves "there is nothing else to go to..I'd be lost & lonely without him". Many JW's say the same thing in their minds when it comes to their abusive mother organisation, no matter how much you reason & intellectualise with them.

MUST OBEY- Very true what you say Must Obey . However the point I'm emphasizing is that all the rank and file members of Jehovah's Witnesses are controlled by the , " information control" spell they are under from the controlling power of the governing body . Of course they are going to believe their doctrines - they are not allowed to research anything else at the risk of being disfellowshipped fpr apostasy . They are trapped by the GB and don't realize it !
R. CRUSOE- A good point you make that in a democratic society a person has the " opportunity " to listen to all arguments before making a decision. That is precisely my point too. The Jehovah's Witneses are not allowed the freedom to listen to any arguments other than what they are spoon fed from the governing body. It is really disgusting how their freedom is taken away from them
