First let me say that someone leaving religious literature as a tip is just plain tacky and cheap. I was also a waitress for a bit and I know the importance of those tips...

On the other hand, would it be possible on this forum to stop generalizing the whole JW organization for what one person did??? I mean that is as bad as saying all Jews are meisers...or all Americans are ignorant.....or all blacks are criminals...C'mon people....I know for a fact a bunch of witnesses that leave great tips....Just depends on the person...

alas i to spent my time in the janatorial trenches.............. and i ALWAYS left a tip.... now how much that tip was varied by the service i got. if my drink was kept full and they checked on my periodicly and made sure i got good food then they at least deserve a 20% and if they went above and beyond well it always depended on what i had with me but i would go beyond 25% if i could.

i guess that alot of the dubs figure why give a lowley non jw waitress any money since they are apparently gonna be eatten by birds at armageddon..................

I was just pointing this out that it bothered me. I didn't realize that I had generalized a whole organization. When that particular waitress talks to JW's again, she is more than likely going to remember, "Oh yeah, the people that don't tip." And make a generalization herself there for which I can't say I blame her. So in effect, even though that person thought they were giving a good witness, they weren't. And as for me, someone who saw this, this makes me not like JW's even moreso than I already did. I thought that I had said this is a very small town that I live in. It's more than likely she will run into JW's again. Bless her heart.

I also know bad tippers who are not or were never JW's. And the truly best tippers I ever saw were some of the local business owners around here, who paid attention when someone was working hard. I myself have realized, when you are a regular somewhere and you leave good tips, you get even better than normal service.

And one other thing. JW's generalize everyone who isn't a part of their organization. Worldy people. People of the world. Worldlings. They try to find the sheep like people in their "sifting" work. That's why I guess when they do crappy things it really bugs me.

I agree that it's tacky, but I'm glad it happens. That selfish and inconsiderate move does more towards keeping that young waitress from joining the cult than an hour of us talking to her.

How pathetic. That rotten JW got to avoid giving a real tip and salved their conscience by leaving what they thought was potentially life-changing "good news". Wanker.

Now if they had left a 20% tip and the tract - I would have been OK with that

The JW's quit frequenting the local Mexican resturant out on Lamar Alexander Parkway between Maryville and Walland as much as they used to.

Maybe the service they received from the hard working waiters and waitresses reached the quality of the tips they left...

I remember eating with the JW's there and only one or two out of a group of twenty left a tip.

Resturants around here have recently started charging up to 17% gratuity and adding it on the bill for tips.

i usually leave 25% if they did a great job..though there have been times I have left considerably more. If they do a crap job...I leave 15% and complain to management.

If I can't afford to tip, I either a) don't go out to eat or b) call in the order and go pick it up myself and eat it at home.

JW's are told to properly tip in the Kingdumb Misery convention articles....so those who just left a tract are just being cheapa$$es...

Yeah that would have bugged me too TNAngel,i usually try and leave in the neighboorhood,of 25-35% on a tip,ESPECIALLY if i got something cheap, then i have gone up to 50%..I don't even bother going into a resturant unless i have enough for a decent tip.

When i read your experience,it reminded me of the post memorial dinner back in '00 at a local resturant, because we were such a large party all the servers were extra attentive, and while everyone was eating and talking about how good the food was, getting their drinks refill damn near before they were completely empty...when it was came time to pay the checks and come up with tips, that's when people started showing their arses.

Me and them(about 15) almost got into an argument cause after they wanted all these exotic checking methods..10 of the 15 got up and tried to leave without leaving a tip...I said "Wait, what about the tip?" loud enough for the nearby tables to overhear..they turned around an almost unanimous look of embarassment and terror..and said"we left ours..look on the table..it's there..." i said"nah..i see mine, and started naming off the people i watched leave a tip" then i said"maybe y'all thought y'all left a tip,but it ain't here" their terror started to turn to passive aggressive anger..so i told them "You know what? y'all go ahead we got this(me and my friend),we'll go ahead and put a tip down for y'all since y'all don't mind "bringing reproach on Jehovah's name" ESPECIALLY after we just came from memorial too..but nevermind that, that's between you and him i suppose.."

They made excuses, and muttered under their breaths, but they came out with some tips, the killer part about it..is that these people were actually pretty "well off",they weren't hurting for cash..they just wanted to be typical "wealthy class" trash, who looked down on,and try to abuse the less fortunate because they have the upper hand..well I let them know quick..they do that when they're not around me....when they are around me they're gonna do things like they know they should have done them from the start, they're not gonna embarrass me..they will be the ones to take the walk of shame, alone.

After me and my friend walked outside, the waitress came out and thanked us for what we did,so for just that,it was worth it to me.

    *** km 5/81 pp. 4-5 1981 "Kingdom Loyalty" District Conventions ***

The insert in the May 1980 issue of OurKingdomService provided good direction on the matter of tipping. It is not against Christian principles to express appreciation in this way for personal services rendered by others. (Luke 10:7) Although this is a personal matter, to neglect doing so where it is expected may cast unfavorable reflections upon Jehovah’s people. To illustrate: The manager of a motel who cooperated with the convention personnel and arranged for many of our brothers and sisters to stay in his facility expressed concern over a problem that developed. The waitresses in his employ had told him that they did not want to wait on Jehovah’s Witnesses as they left no tips. On one occasion, a party of Jehovah’s Witnesses arrived just before the restaurant was to close. Arrangements were made for this group to sit together and be served, despite the fact that the workers had to stay after closing time to do so. It was reported that the only tip left was a copy of a pocket-size book that was released earlier that week at the convention. While so-called fast-food eating establishments do not provide waiter service and no tipping is involved, in restaurants where such service is provided it is left to the brothers to consider leaving a tip where this is the local custom.

    Rule #1: Do nothing that reflects unfavorably on Jehovah's people;

Rule #2: When in doubt, leave a tip and some literature, thus doubly satisfying Rule #1.
