While there are words that we should not teach children and not use in a polite public environment, known as bad language. There is one word that gets passed around all the time and is probably the most hurtful and scary word out there. That would is metastasis. If you do not know what this means, here is the definition.

the transference of disease-producing organisms or of malignant or cancerous cells to other parts of the body by way of the blood or lymphatic vessels or membranous surfaces.

About five years ago my mother in law got breast cancer, she had a mastectomy and then she was told she was fine. This last September she was diagnosed with breast cancer again, and had a mastectomy on the other breast. Then when they were doing her post check ups they saw something on her lungs and we got to fully learn as a family the full meaning of the world metastasis. She is doing the kemotherapy now, but has been told that the spots on her lungs are more then one and very numerous. Lets put it this way, the doctor mentioned that the treatment will give her more time, but will not save her.

This is not my first contact with this word in my life, but every time I have encountered it, I attended a funeral a short time later. So if you ask me, there is no worse world then the word metastasis and I hope none of you or any one you care about, ever has to hear it mentioned about you or them.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother in law. Based on her many good works, I expect she will have much support as she goes through this battle, again.

Your experience mimics my own in many ways. My mother-in-law had breast cancer, was pronounced cancer free and stayed in remission for 2 years. In August 2006 she went for routine tests and they found new spots on her lungs and liver. On Thanksgiving she went into the hospital to stay and then, sadly, died on December 11.

That truly is the worst word.

Yes - I've recently heard this word used in reference to my aunt. She's been battling a little over a year now, it's a rough road to be sure. My thoughts are with you and your family.

As for a business associate and friend of mine, two words usually follow the above mentioned word and they are "stage four". He lasted only a few months. He was 52. I turned 52 a few days ago.

Cancer is the one thing that truly makes life unfair. I hope your mother-in-law recovers well and is fine.
