We had our meeting on the last day of the year 2006. The previous 5 yrs we had gone to the 9pm fireworks display in our local area with other witness familys. This was so our children could enjoy the display and the family atmosphere.( They also had rides and a concert for the kids).

Well, back to the meeting. The PO got up before the final song and said " We want you Brothers to remember what night this is. The World is out there celebrating and partying. We don't want to get caught up in this......etc etc" I cannot remember word for word. But it was enough for my wife and her friends to feel guilty about going out to see the fireworks. They said they couldn't go because their Conscience would'nt let them.

My boy was 6 and suddenly he was'nt going with his friends at all. He looked so dissappointed.

I was "boiling inside". I said to my wife " Can't you think for yourself? Use your own mind" Etc

If that brother had'nt said that, we all would have went as a family. Instead i took my son and met up with one of the other fathers who brought his children and we had a nice night.

It would have been good to have our familys with us though.

But i guess having Fun is wrong. The New System would be a fun place to be would'nt it!

I'm glad you took your son anyway. Growing up we would always go to the park on our bikes to watch and our elder dad never said anything. But in our hall here in TN it was frowned upon. Luckily my husband was an evil unbelieving mate, so anything we did was written off as his doing. I definately don't care anymore what they think. I bought all our holiday stuff at the local Wal Mart and ran into several Witnesses.

I've often wondered how the dubs cope here every July 1st on cracker night. It's to celebrate the Territory's right to self govern so I imagine they would be forbidden from celebrating it. Watching everyone else go buy their fireworks, having a blast () setting them off, must be torture. And for what?

That's pretty bad, if fact very bad. It shows there is no uniformity between KH's. I can understand not donating to fund the show, (donations are needed for most) but not attending?

Growing up there were several families from three KH's that would go camping on the Fouth of July weekend. The only fireworks show's we ever missed were those cancelled by rain.

    Good for you!

My son managed to stay awake till midnight this new year (usually he sleeps right through the bangs and pops) and he was so excited hearing the countdown and watching the fireworks through the window (it was a foul night).

"Do JWs celebrate new year?" he asked.

"Naw," and with a glint in my eye and a smile I said, "It's pagan."

"But aren't wedding rings?" he retorted ...

I happen to know that at Brooklyn Bethel residences, many of the Bethelites go onto the roofs to watch the 4th of July fireworks over the Staute of Liberty and the New Year's fireworks too. They don't seem to think there is anything wrong with it.

Sounds like that brother was stating his own opinion.

I remember years ago a "very theocratic" brother saying a similar thing that we should never be part of these "worldly" celebrations.

Anyway my wife and I went down to riverfront to watch the firework display. (we were not "very theocratic")

There was quite a crowd there. Everyone very happy and having fun.

We stood and watched the display which lasted about 30 minutes I suppose.

Who did my wife spot standing about 15-20 feet away. Yes! none other than , Bro.Theocratic, his wife. 2 sons, and daughter.

Another example of the double standards of some JW's.

Ask him if the bethelites have stopped going to the roof of the various bethel facilities to watch the new york fireworks every memorial day, July 4th, and labor day?

I used to live for watching the fireworks on the roof. we had the best view in the city.
