When I learned CPR and first aid, an elder told me that would be a very useful thing to know during the GT and 'Geddon. So, In a way, I felt that I was making my own contribution.

I was only about 17 or 18 at the time and secretely was playing with explosives (mostly low explosives I made myself from chemicals I bought.) If I remember correctly, I got the formula for the exploding clothing from a book I got at the library and it was a receipe for making gun cotton.
It would have never blown apart any jail bars or anything like that. It was probably just more wishful thinking than something that would have really worked...(of course all we did as dubs was just that.)
I guess I watched too much MyGiver or Get Smart on TV at the time. LOL!
Yes, I remember the constant fear factor too. Funny that we are seeing exactly the same type of fear factor being used by the politicians to manipulate us today. Lesson is: if someone is trying to sell you fear...ask for beer:)

I told my husband about this thread and he confesses to buying a survival book and army surplus stuff like water purifying pills.
We have camping gear and 4-wheelers too.
All kinds of good stuff to escape to the woods with.
I read his survival book and learned what plants we could eat and I also learned how to salt cure meat like they did before refrigeration.
We were nuts!
had 4 other young bros all armed to the teeth and training down at the local oval everynight. we used to prepare for and practise the violence needed to survive the big A by going around torching schools and blowing up cars....happy days
I took the advise of a next door neighbor pioneer sister and had a bottom molar tooth pulled in 74 as she said armaggedon will be here next year and you'll have new teeth.
Every time I eat I think of her and 1975.
I guess I could get a bridge now bit it's mucho denero.
In 1974 I was volunteering in one CA department and I met a brother who told everyone what he was doing in preparing for the GT. He was reprinting mini-Watchtowers (about a quarter original size). His idea was that the authorities could take all the literature but he'd be able to smuggle his mini-Watchtowers.
I guess he went out of business when CD-ROMs came along 20 years later. What a waste, old light is old light whatever size it is printed at.

Mindchild, I had to laugh rading about your nitrated socks. I was a 'science geek" myself. Wasn't it great when you could buy chemicals without having NIOSH, OSHA and god knows how many other governmental nannys requesting a signed proof of ID and a sample of genetic material?

On the serious side, I know too many for whom Armageddon preparation meant dropping out of High School or quitting jobs or selling businesses to pioneer prior to 1975. What sacrifices were made on the altar of Stupidity.
Limited life experience and high credbility in the GB made me do a few stupid things to be prepared. But by summer 1974 i came to the conclution that more time was needed before the Big A arrived.
1.- the "spritual" state of the org. I noticed jerks being appointed as elders CO DO etc
2.- The logistic required to maitain a couple of millions jw survivors around the planet "together" under the GB was not there.
