Three possibilities:
It is at least possible Watchtower really wanted to enforce the idea that Jesus is so much lower than God. So a good way to keep that enforcement is to really make what Jesus did for our sins seem even more horrible than it was.
Watchtower had to come up with something to make theirselves different than the Christian religions. What a better way than to remove the instrument of death from Jesus and substitute a pole in its place.
Jesus died for our sins on the Pole, doesn't have a good ring to it.
(Just Guessing)
Besides which, it's totally phallic - how else would those dried up ole prunes get their jollies, huh?

mmmmm steak.
I think they have a very weak arguement about the stake. If the T or cross had been used by pagans for centuries, and romans were pagans, wouldn't it be the ultimate disgrace to kill Jesus on such a well known pagan symbol???? I don't get it.
They should have use---- The Mighty Penis Pole...................................oompa
Hi,
Quite simply another cunning scheme to throw as many people off the trail.
Colossians 2:15
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
1 Corinthians 1:18
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Same deal with why they demote Jesus who died on the cross.

Stephen
I have had this discussion many times in the past 10 years. The JW's will admit that the cross is a pagan
symbol used by pagans. The Romans did execute using crosses. I believe that it was more of a T shape
than a true cross. Jesus was executed by the Romans who were pagans and they did use crosses. What
is the big deal about admitting Jesus died for us on a cross?
The Romans did not execute Jesus on a symbol. The execution apparatus usually had two pieces of timber, but it was not a symbol of anything religious in "pagan" thought. Just reflect on this a moment. Two intersecting lines forms a very, very basic shape, just as circles, triangles, spirals, a single line, etc. are also very basic shapes, and all of these have been used symbolically in world religions. Why wouldn't they be? It would be odd if a basic shape would not be capitalized on for symbolic or artistic purposes. But because these are basic shapes, they occur widely throughout architecture and technology -- just because a piece of technology has the arc of a circle doesn't mean the purpose is meant to invoke the notion of a "world egg", and just because something has two intersecting lines doesn't mean that the object was meant to venerate that shape.

I got absent minded here on JWD while barbecuing on Sat. Big mistake. We got stuck eating some very torchered steak.

I remember being told by an elder that some people use the cross as a phallic symbol so that is another reason that JW forbid the cross. I asked what looks more like a male sex organ a cross or a straight poll? just more "proof" that I am spritually weak I guess!
