I believe there was a watchtower article where the FDS called themselves the "modern day prophets of God".
Does anyone know where that claim was made?
I remember having an argument about this with a friend (we were both JW's at the time), and my friend was saying that they
never claimed to be prophets.

According to the elder I talked to it doesn't matter if they said they were prophets or not. The important thing is they didn't use the word 'thus', they never said 'thus sayeth the Lord'. So they are off the hook! and yes, he said it with a straight face.

I think the article you ask about is ‘They Shall Know that a Prophet Was Among Them’ in The Watchtower for April 1 1972, pp. 197-200. (Yes, April Fools Day).
