Neither of us have ever met the man, so we have to go by what others have written about him. The overall impression I get, so far, is that Russell was a sincere, true-believer and a fairly nice guy. Rutherford, OTOH, sounds like a total a$$h*le.
So, here's my conjecture. Russell was deep in the throes of late-life Cognitive Dissonance (he actually believed his own stuff) and just couldn't give it up.
I started out thinking Russell was a helluva thinker and an excellent writer and utterly sincere.
Then, I read as much as I could about his alliance with Maria and the strange marriage they had.
I read about his peculiar relationship with the ward, Rose Ball.
I read his testimony at trial for the Miracle Wheat and divorce imbroglios.
I studied his changes in wording in subsequent Watchtower articles which rehashed his previous writings. The changes made nail it for me.
Russell was a criminal returning to the scene of a crime covering up evidence of malfeasance.
That makes it pretty inescapable for my conclusion forming opinion.
Russell knew where and why he erred. He blamed Jehovah and kept pushing his own agenda forward..ever forward.
At least William Miller had the honesty to apologize for his screwy date failures.
Is there anything more dangerous/pathetic than a True Believer who discovers his own error and will not admit it?
