I was wearing a cotton bathrobe this weekend and went to the gas stove to adjust the coffee pot. Suddenly there was a burst of flame on top part of my sleeve. Tore the bathrobe off, threw it to the floor, and stomped it out, although the fire caught on another part of the bathrobe and I had to keep stomping. If the flame had caught the bottom part of my sleeve, I could very easily have been severely burned.

I'll know from now on to be more careful what I wear in the kitchen.

    Frightening; I'm glad you're OK.

I used to have a robe with big droopy sleeves that caught on the handles of pans; nearly dumped hot food all over!

    Better luck next time.

When my sister and I were very small kids we had a radiant gas heater that sat on the floor. My sister was wearing a flannel nightgown and stood too close. Mom saw it stripped it over her head in an instant. Could have been tragic.

You have to watch blended fabrics around flame. !00% cotton is pretty hard to flash up like that... a blend will ignite easily. All cotton will char but shouldnt melt or drip when burning. I used to demonstrate cotton with a propane torch at safety meetings... it takes a bit to get it burning.

I could bore you to tears with what I have learned about Fire Retardant industrial clothes since the OSHA standards changed a few years ago.

I met a woman alcoholic who did the same thing in her robe, but she was so drunk she passed out
without attending to her wounded arm.
When I visited her she was near to losing her arm from the severe burn and infection. (Her damaged liver could not help her heal) She was only 38.

While working at a retail store I met another woman, who stepped into the shower and got scalded, she fainted, and fell into the bath with the scalding water continuing to run on her.
She was rescued by her daughter who heard her fall into the tub.
Her scars were ghastly and her legs had to be amputated.

To this day: I think about the first woman every time I light my gas stove (and I never light the stove in a loose sleeved robe) and I think about the second poor woman every time I step into a shower.

Sheesh! I'm glad you are ok. My biggest fear is that I'll get severly burned and have to go through burn treatment I told my husband that if I am ever burned to just let me die!

    I set myself on fire!!!

OMG! At first I thought this was either a protest or a suicide attempt! You know, set yourself on fire and then start a thread about it!

This happened to me when I was a very little girl - I barely remember it.

I am glad you are OK!

so glad you handled it so fast! Hillbilly, I wouldn't be bored if you shared more info about flame retardant fabrics - it might help someone some day to know what you know. I do wear all cotton 90% of the time, I just like it better, but also I know it doesn't catch fire so quickly as synthetics either.
