Thanks for all your input.
When my kids were little, I know I praised their efforts more. When they are little, lets face it, everything IS pretty amazing:) As they grow though, I can tell when they are truly making an effort, and efforts are worth praising to some extent (I'm not cold:) ) But when my son went to a concert after obviously not practicing, and it showed, I did not tell him it was amazing. I found the part of the song that really shined. I also said, Ryan, I have heard when you worked hard for a concert, and I really didn't hear that tonite. And he told me, yeah, I should have practiced.
We actually talked today on the phone about the accomplishments he has had over the years and the failures. And he told me that has been able to see through the years how not being falsely praised has helped him. Also not letting him get away with crap in the name of 'protecting' him. He always knew we would protect him and care for him, but that he wasn't gonna get a pass.
Are you honest with your kids?
