She already had her test, totally clean, and was shocked I've never been tested, and even more shocked that I didn't feel the need.

Another of my buddies said that it could be "pee in a cup" too instead of the Q tip.

Men - such wimps! Actually I've watched it being done on tv programme and the lad just winced a bit and didnt look that agonised by the experience. Just relax as much as possible as this will reduce the pain. Concentrate on breathing and not what is happening - count to three breathing in and then to three breathing out, nice and measured, like RichieRich recommends for a tat.

Its not exactly a walk in the park for us girls either, but that's no excuse not to be tested regularly.

Good for you man, you're only missing the most intense greatest feeling in the world, and of course the "pleasure" of these tests. I only got another 45 minutes, and I go in...

Don't know about this particular test at all, but wanted to offer a simple suggestion to help distract yourself a little bit.

In additon to breathing deeply, I also scratch my tummy with my fingernail. I scratch enough to hurt a little and then I don't notice the shot, incision, whatever, as much. It's like I'm controlling the pain sensation and therefore less disturbing.

Ouch. As a recruit in boot camp we were all shown the tape about STD's and their effects on our nether regions. Naturally, this collection of pictures and videos portrayed many worst-case scenarios. Yuck. Immediately following this presentation, volunteers were requested to be tested regularly for the duration of our military careers. I was one of the volunteers and didn't find out what I'd signed up for until arriving at my first duty station. For the next four years, I had my 'bore punched' on a monthly basis.

It hurts. Not excruciatingly, but extremely uncomfortably. That particular orifice is most definitely designed for exit only. You'll be fine, it's just not something you'll want to do again.
