First off ....Crumpet you are amazing !!!!!!! Love your story

I truly strive to erradicate all personal blunders from my conscientiousness ...but you just now reminded me of the time I trapped myself in a public building elevator .

Our Art League use to have it's gallery in an old building in town . The building had been a hotel in the early 1900's now it housed small office spaces , shops , gallery and the basement is a resturant . One evening I went to set up a display of my photo's in the gallery .I was there longer than expected and when i went to leave noticed I was the last one in the building . I took the outside elevator down to street level and found the last person out had locked me in . I only had a key to the gallery not the outside entrance of the building ! The elevator then would not go back up to the office level ! I didn't have a cell phone and was beginning to panic . The elevator has glass that looks out to the street so I am franticly trying to wave someone down , but also so embarassed for someone to know what I had done . The elevator had an emergency phone in it .....I picked it up and found it connected straight to the police station .Sheepishly I explained the situation to the operator ....she laughed and said she would contact a key holder right away . The guy that finall y came to let me out was unamused which fueled my embarrassment even more ......thanks for reminding me .

My gift is that although I don't take very good care of myself, I don't seem to get sick much, except for allergies. Of course, being a social phobe might help me stay away from a lot of germs, but I do a lot of cleaning for others, so have plenty of exposure to germs, I'm afraid. I think I have a slight immunity to spider bites, but am allergic to mosquitoes! How strange.

Not my story but my sisters. She was working the late shift at K-Mart. It was her job to restock some shelves in the back before closing, she was always such a hard worker, immersing herself in it, she didnt' notice that the store closed with everyone in it gone. I got off work and went to pick her up, but she wasn't out front waiting, the front of the store is dark and I panic thinking she's been kidnapped. There was one other person in the store, a guy that did the floors would get locked in till morning, problem was he didn't speak English, so he was no help. Her and I ended communicating by pay phone and got the manager out of bed to come unlock the store so she could get out. He was NOT happy.

Electrical cords... phone cords...any kind of cord... I can get them so tangled up that it takes forever to detangle them.. I have to use computer cords and extention cords and projector cords when I do seminars.. No matter how carefully I pack them, they are in a terrible tangle when I go to set up. Drives me nuts. I make sure the cords are out of the way so no one trips over them...but a couple of times, in mid presentation, I've tripped over them...

I waited and I waited, becoming increasingly aware of the thick weave of blackened cobwebs above my head and the dire stench of rubbish beneath my nose. I also was very aware that I was not my most becomingly dressed. I tried not to think about spiders. Time ticked by slowly and I started to be very annoyed with myself.

Wow, Crump, I thought it was bad the other day when a neighbor told me car lights were on. I ran out and cut them off, tapped on his car window and told him he had my permission to cut my lights off if he should notice them on again. Then, as I got to the door of my building, I realized I didn't have key to get in. I ran, through the ice and snow and flagged him down. I poured on my best southern belle and asked him if he could let me in the building, which meant he had to turn his car off and jaunt through the ice and snow with me. And like you, I wasn't so impressively dressed or groomed.

And something nice about your post: Crump, you have a real talent with words. The above snippet is better than any writing I've seen in a long time. I usally can't read fiction because the writing isn't good. You should do some writing.

Oh FlyingHighNow - you have made my day. I have always written since I was a child - I've filled maybe 20 volumes each of about 200 pages so at least I have plenty of memories to draw upon. My main problem has been "finding my voice". I tend to pick up accents wherever I go if I don't concentrate. Similarly, I pick up other writer's voices when I write if I'm not careful and that's not very original. So thank you, thank you very much!

coffee-black - you need to get a cordless mouse and keyboard post haste!

pubsinger - is that invite retracted then? I don't break anything - as long as you only give me plastic cups to drink from and don't whatever you do under any circumstances let me near the washing up after dinner!

Aww, that is so good. You have made my day, too. And about other writer's voices? All musicians and writers are influenced by other writers. It's combining that influence with your own talent in a unique way that matters. In art class they make you copy classics to learn more about the methods of the greats. And in literature and writing classes, they have you study other writers for a reason. Please keep writing and take some classes. We can all say, "We knew Crumpet when..." And then when you are a gazillionaire, you can fly us all over to your palatial mansion for a week long apostafest.

Probably less palatial mansion and more like padded cell, but ya never know!

You know, many nights and often days, I think I am going to go crazy or feel like I am already there. Just take good care of yourself, lady, you are awesome.

    Hi Crumpet.

Loved the story. Reminded me a little of one I had when I was in my flat. Saturday morning there was a ring at the door. Just a woman doing a sales call. Not even a minuet later another ring. It was a girl from downstairs who had just gone outside to get the milk, dressed only in her dressing gown and the door had closed behind her. Oh Sh*t. ……

She was a bit upset and asked if she could borrow my phone to make a call to her family who had the spare key. I think that they were about an hours drive away. At this point I was thinking that she was wanting to come in my flat, but being a bloke, and also the fact that I lived in a studio flat and my bed was not made, the place was a bit of a mess. So I was not too keen for her to come in. So I said that she could borrow the phone, I closed the door on her, and got my phone which was a cordless, and gave it to her in the hall and then shut the door again. My thought at the time was to try to make the place as respectable as I could in just the few seconds I had. But I just left this poor girl out on the landing, feeling rather exposed I am sure. But the funny thing was the woman that had called on my door to start with was just across the hall and was watching all of this go on, and the look that she gave me when I closed the door the second time….Ouch…She was right to look at me in that way as well. Can’t believe I left this poor girl out there just because of my vanity….

To finish the story and make myself look a little bit better, after she made the call she knocked on the door again and thanked me for the use of the phone. But I had been thinking in the mean time and I wondered if she had left a window open. I did a job then that I needed ladders for. So she said that she had left a window open and so I went and got into her flat and all was well…..Phew…. She was very relieved. I felt a little better as well…the hero….

But here is the punch line. When I went through her flat to open the door, I noticed that her flat was 5 times more untidy than mine…..tut…

Anyway, a few days later and there was a ring at the door and she popped a bottle of very expensive whisky in my hands as a thank you. I don’t know if I would have preferred porn……Mmm…???
