A Report From the Minneapolis Scientology Protest

I was curious about the worldwide Scientology protests today, so I attended the one in Minneapolis. It was interesting. It was bitterly cold with subzero temperatures and high winds. But there was still a nice size turnout. I didn't have a sign. I handed out a few fliers and mostly observed. It was dignified. The only Scientologists I saw were in the church. They just stared at the protesters with a blank expression on their faces.

Several of the signs made reference to the Scientologist's tax exempt status. It would be great if lawmakers looked at this more seriously. If you check out the prices that they charge for their courses at their official website, it becomes pretty apparent that they are more of a business than a religion. It would be nice if this also prompts investigation into the Watchtower Society's finances and tax exempt status. I would at least like to see a public disclosure of their finances.

Did anyone else attend one of these or see their local news coverage?

Interesting. I am fascinated by this movement. Did anonymous wear masks or cover their faces? I will be following the news of the events. Maybe next time, even participating.

The majority had covered faces. This was probably partially a result of the dangerous wind chills, but it appeared that some were also concerned about keeping their identities secret. I was told that the Scientology church had a video camera and were videotaping from inside. I saw a few people with masks from V for Vendetta.

Bump. This Scientology protest movement is powerful. I was hoping for more discussion about how this might increase public awareness of other cults, including Jehovah's Witnesses.

Thanks for sharing this. I wonder if they had any protests here in Tennessee yesterday?

Hmm...just like the Scientology recruiters that used to try to shoo me in for my free "personality test".

Yeah, I saw some of those guys on Sunday! They had the V masks! They weren't at the actual church (located at 4th and something d.t. San Diego), but they were on Broadway.

More power to those guys! I had to work today, or else I'd have joined them!

That's one scary group. Their intimidation tactics can be quite extreme.

I'm no fan of Scientology, but I think this whole "Anonymous" thing is kinda stupid. Like people don't already know what a wacked out cult Scientology is? The whole mysterious "messages" on youtube, with the digitized voice... very juvenile.
