Boeing, Ikea and Me and a new JOB

So, today I had an assessment at Boeing to see if I would qualify to build AIRPLANES. It was a mechanic job.

Scary think is, I passed the test-with flying colors!

If you knew me, I am a girly girl at heart. I sew, I bake, I read novels by Jane Austen. Ok, Ken Follett too, but STILL. I cannot imagine that they have people like me building airplanes. I judge cars by how pretty the paint is.

So, in a couple of months I will be taking the training class and then get hired (please god).

Probably the 787, so watch out!

OH, the Ikea part. That test was harder than I thought it would be. All the mechanical stuff, you know:) It made me REALLY grateful for all the Ikea furniture I have built over the years. Being able to figure out incomprehensible blueprints came in handy for me today. It's a good job, union (Ok, I have divided thoughts on unions), and Boeing pays full med/dental/education.

I told my DD(16) that I am going wear my husbands old shirts to work now that I have what was his old job. She thought it was funny that her mom would be going 'butch'. Husband was not so amused, but very happy I will (probably) get hired on. NOW we can afford for our kids to go to college! And I can afford things like getting my nails done (ok, I would never do that, but I could be that frivolous every now and again if I wanted to!)

I always throw the Ikea instructions away before I start, they make things more confusing for me. Congratulations on the new job.

If you dont like Unions tell them you will pay your insurance and dental. Because the only reason you have that is the union.

    Hi,

This wasn't to start a union bashing/raving thread. I truly have some mixed views on it. I do recognize the good that unions have accomplished in industry. I also see where the excesses have ultimately damaged it. Some of the things going on are just plain destructive.

Mostly I dread the 'rules'. My husband hated them when he was in the union, and now that he isn't, he still hates them. It gets ridiculous-non-union people are not allowed to TOUCH tools. Union people are not allowed to do anything outside of their job. EVER. They have people filing "grievances" over idiotic things. Sometimes it seems to me like a KH, where everyone is supposed to know the rules and if anyone breaks one, they know they will be tattled on-and then there are a few guys on the floor with 'power' to help or NOT a fellow employee to get their (real) problems heard and dealt with. Sound familiar?

I have been hearing about some of the things that happen for nearly 20 years. There is a lot of petty power mongering going on. It might be much worse w/o union-I get that. I just dread being in the middle of it. Yes, I will love all the benes. So long as the union doesn't managed to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. I am sure Korea and Japan could figure out how to build planes like they have cars and everything else.

I might be building helicopters soon as well. So you might want to watch out there too. Don't know what type yet.
