I remember being at some JW gatherings and certain ones would toss back beers like they were dying of thirst. Some would get loaded too when we'd go to resteraunts together.

I used to drink a lot as a JW. I drink very little now.

Yep - more alcoholics per capita in than I have ever found outside.

YES -the reason - as a JW you cant do this, you cant do that, you cant do this , you cant do that - so when there is something you can do - drink - JWs do it. Plain and simple

Being part of the "elders Clique" every week we used to go back to one anothers homes after the meetings and get wasted. We had 2 elders with whom we were good friends and they used to do regular channel crossings to France with our orders and stocked up with crate after crate of wine and beer.

The number of times we used to go out on the ministry on a saturday with raging hangovers do a couple of doors then dissapear to the local Asda for a fry up.

Ah the good times, but am virtually teetotal now can't stand the hangovers and getting too old for them now.

Plus there is SUCH a gray area with drinking. You cannot get drunk, but you can "get a good buzz". Well, that is very subjective. I've been drunk a number of times, and everyone believed I was just buzzed.

As long as you don't act stupid or throw up while 'strongly buzzed' or drunk, no one knows you are, so it's easy to get away with. And it's fun :)

HA! The reason I was hauled into a JC meeting was because of those alcoholic hypocrites. I am glad to because that is where I had my awakening. Man the stories I could tell regarding witnesses and alcohol. I have a bit more insight into it based on my past career, so I have a little 'behind the scenes' knowledge n this regard.

It doesn't make sense to me why JW's are allowed to abuse alcohol considering how much harm it causes. I guess it must be because there would be a rebellion if it was banned.

I would have to agree with everyones comments, it appears as Min. as stated that booze is one of things thats given the OK

strange at it is. It was a very rare thing that someone got DF for boozing if I can remember.. I can quite confidently say if it wasn't for the drinking J-dubs that I was

surrounded with during my teen years I probably would have not indulged as much as I did , they were after all my role models.

Thankfully after been a heavy drinker of sorts for years ( rock band ) I've seen the health and social damages it causes so now I'm just down to the odd beer in the summer.

Maybe all of that repression of sorts drives them to drink

Growing up we had parties to play pool, play cards, BBQ, you name it. And they ALL centered on alcohol. In my last hall an elder gave a stern talk about alcohol. He said if you can feel the effects of alcohol, you have had too much. He and his wonderful wife were parents to a son at Bethel and a son who is a caretaker of an Assembly Hall. His wife came to my baby shower reeking of alcohol! She is a great person, giving and loving. And obviously immune to her husband's counsel!

My own dad always seemed to have a short glass of something on the rocks. I could mix drinks when I was 8. To this day, the sound of ice in a glass makes me think of him.
